I hear that ReiserFS is actually pretty decent from a technical perspective, particularly with large numbers of small file handling.

Why hasn’t it just been completely renamed and taken over by other developers?

It hasn’t been renamed and is still in the kernel but is deprecated and slated for removal because lack of maintainers.

I think the answer is simple: btrfs exists.

The company behind it folded after the dude got put in the clink and nobody cared for it anymore, perhaps precisely because the dude who invented it murdered his wife.

        A) Btrfs exists

        B) It had some technical superiority in some specific workloads 20 years ago

        C) Nobody other than the infamous wife killer ever carried it forward despite some efforts

I wanted to upvote this but it’s sitting at 9 votes which just seems right.

I’ve run kill -9 and similar heaps before, but weirdly this comment reminded me of this: https://youtu.be/Fow7iUaKrq4

Per my teacher in the late '90s: it is terrible to leave orphans; always kill whole families. (This was in relation to Oracle DBs and relationships between tables and data)

The prof had mostly transitioned to farming (which sounded utterly ridiculous to me at the time, but I’m a senior engineer who just bought a farm…) already in his early 80s so I’m not sure how familiar he was with the batman creation process.
