After millions in NFT sales, the hyped “play to earn” game was effectively dead in weeks.
This headline works with both capitalized and lowercase “legacy”.
“The reality is… what you really need in order for this really to work is a great game that people want to play and get nothing out,” Brink said. “And that’s the problem… By and large, web3 games are predicated on getting something out.”
That and, there’s no incentive or real obligation for developers to use the money earned that way on the game itself, it sounds like Molyneux made no secret of using it for something else entirely:
Despite the game’s almost total failure as a going concern, though, Legacy rode the crest of the crypto hype wave to pre-sold economic success that Molyneux said “[gave] us the money to fund Masters of Albion,” in a 2024 interview. “That’s what we used the majority of the money for…”
Very hard to feel sympathy for people who not only fell for an NFT-grift, but an NFT-grift by Peter Molyneux.
Seriously, I figured that
SporeGodus would be the last time he’d have a moderately successful grift.Spore was Will Wright.
Whoops. It was so garbage I misattributed it to molyneux in my head.
Hilarious to say the least. I would say fuck Molyneux but at this point, it’s their fault.
It’s not just Molyneux, even Will Wright has been behind some weird NFT project. As an old boomer that idolized some of these people it’s a real let down. Dark Knight was right man: you either die a hero or become a villain
That reminds me, they worked NFTs into star citizen yet?
I looked into it (should be telling of the company) Thus far still just a lot of overpriced digital content. Over 100 dollars for a digital spaceship. 🚀
Can be a fun game if your computer doesn’t implode trying to play it.
Ah that’s so disappointing to hear that Will Wright was partaking in this crap. He was such a pioneer in games.
So was Molyneux if you go back far enough. Bullfrog had a series of absolute bangers.
I couldn’t stop following this from the moment it was first announced. It looked so incredibly bad. Ignoring that the economics of play to earn don’t work without a steady stream of new
rubesplayers buying in, this looked like the most uninspired, boring idle management game I’d ever seen. It was so clearly the lowest effort rug pull they could manage. Can’t wait for Molyneux’s next game
