I mean, I suppose so. I can imagine a theoretical AI that isn’t trained on stolen work, isn’t insanely energy intensive, isn’t controlled by the ownership class, and doesn’t hallucinate wildly. But that’s so far away from what AI is in our current context, drawing that distinction feels like losing the forest for the trees, at this point in time.

Quite a lot of people, especially here on the Fediverse. You’d be wise to care too - AI is no friend to the working class.

Yeah, I didn’t particularly like that doctor. After I had a bad bout of depression, she started treating me like I was an addict drug-seeking, even though I used my meds at work and never used cannabis at work because, you know, rules and stuff.
I have a hard time believing that she was that critical of prescribing to people who use alcohol on a regular basis.
Having them was really nice. I had such an easier time staying on top of my health and fitness, the tidiness of my home, getting my work done, and working on hobbies. I didn’t love feeling drained at the end of the day when I crashed, but on balance, it was an improvement to my life.
Then there was a shortage, so I couldn’t get it, and my doctor said that she wouldn’t prescribe it for me any more anyway, until I stopped using cannabis (even though it’s legal here). And now my new doctor can’t get any of my diagnosis paperwork and doesn’t want to prescribe it until I get tested again.
It’s like the process for getting ADHD meds is uniquely designed to be difficult to navigate for people with ADHD.

Is it particularly likely that hosting a Jellyfin server would attract unwanted attention? I’d say probably not, unless you’re doing something else that might draw scrutiny.
The solutions look a lot different for the real loneliness epidemic than a “male loneliness epidemic”. You fix the first by creating more walkable cities, more third places you can be without needing to spend money, and giving people the time and money they need to go out, do things, and socialize.
The proposed solutions for the “male loneliness epidemic” seem to be a lot more like shitty men saying “women need to lower their standards and be okay with being my therapist/mom/girlfriend, while I change nothing about myself”

Nothing sends me into a blind rage faster than seeing someone flick a cigarette butt out their car window. Not littering is SO easy, the bar is on the floor, and yet so many people just don’t care at all.

The market would have to do more than just recover for people to recoup their losses, correct?English4·3 months agoI’m glad that’s worked well for you! For the overwhelming majority, keeping their money in the 401k and continuing to make regular contributions, regardless of market volatility, is the wisest course of action.
compostgoblin@slrpnk.netto ADHD@lemmy.world•Has anyone figured out a good way to remember information sources?English2·3 months agoI use Pocket, Zotero, and Obsidian. I save news articles from my RSS feeds and social media to Pocket, and assign them tags. Journal articles I find get saved to Zotero, which saves a PDF too, if available. Both Pocket and Zotero have plugins to sync with Obsidian, which I also use for general notetaking and as a personal journal.

compostgoblin@slrpnk.netto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•*Permanently Deleted*English5·4 months agoAccounting. The advice given to me when I went to college was “major in something ‘practical’ and minor in what you love”. I think that was good advice. That way you end up with in-demand skills and a solid fallback, but by doing minors and extra certificates, you get to spend time learning things you’re passionate about, and you can demonstrate to future employers that you are well-rounded and adaptable.

It’s a mental shortcut, with often disastrous consequences.

I notice myself paying way more attention to the infrastructure that normally fades into the background. Stuff like “I wonder how big the transformer for this building is?” or “Ooh, that’s a hefty cooling tower, I wonder how much chilled water they use?”
