It’s because he’s a telepath.
He acted the heck out of being Bester. He wasn’t Bester, he was Bestest. Or alternatively Baseder.
He was best at being the bestest bester.
With very little time on screen he gave the character as much or more depth than many of the main cast. He really did do a fantastic job with him.
