In most of the rest of the western world, simply owning a trap like that is illegal - setting one will land you a serious fine and a criminal conviction. They are super dangerous, and you are just as likely to catch a person as you are an animal
It’s almost certainly an Alaskan trap line and she’s possibly commiting a felony. Lynx are fair game for certain seasons and yes the traps aren’t particularly nice.

It’s safe, it’s a coyote trap that gloms on without drawing blood or breaking bones. Can even stick your hand in it.
