i used to work long hours in a lab full of geiger counters all making various different pitch and tone beeps and chirps at various intervals. didn’t love it, but it was fine

There’s always some background radiation. Unless you’re deep underground like that one experiment that kept getting messed up by random particles, I suppose.
Depends how they’re designed. Some only sound an audible alert once a set exposure rate or total exposure is reached (this is how the clicking in Fallout works IIRC)
The ones we worked with were set to make a chirp for every nuclear decay they detected, as audible feedback that they were powered on and functioning. (Cosmic background radiation produces a few chirps a minute even with no radioactive material present).

Not me fighting for my life to hear someone talking to me while my walkie talkie is going full blast on its two volume settings: “too loud” and “still too loud”
My day at work: Contractors hammering upstairs, smoke alarm in the kitchen, metro screeching, mate having a cough fit, a phone vibrating on the microwave.
Life’s a fucking party sometimes.
I seem to have trained my immunity to various noises by listening to industrial and assorted avantgarde music for twenty years. Now MRI noise doesn’t irritate me, construction outside sometimes sounds like some tunes I’d listen to, and I have once thought that the muffler in the car fell off until I paused the audio. The latter became one of my favorite albums since then.
Oooh! What is the album? I’m a sad fool for noise-as-music. The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation and Black Boned Angel are some of my favorite backgrounds.
Btw, I listened to some of Black Boned Angel. Quite oldschool, reminiscent of old funeral doom and generally extremely slow doom and drone. I’m guessing you will like Black Vomit. You might dig these too:

I checked out Black Vomit and really enjoyed it! That’s the kind of noise-as-music that I like. It is equally background and foreground; melts into my environment while I’m focusing on something else, but interesting and attention-grabbing in the moments when my focus waivers. Excellent recommendation, thank you!
I wrote down your jazz recommendations and am slowly getting to them (lately I haven’t been much in the mood for jazz, but the mood always comes back around eventually). Free Lancing was a hell of a ride, and I loved every track. Shared it with a friend of mine who also likes experimental/eccentric guitar-focused music and they also liked it. Of jazz, I prefer stuff like James ‘Blood’ Ulmer’s ‘Free Lancing’, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant, Lanzallamas, Cecil Taylor, Needle Play, Zu’s ‘Carboniferous’, Le Scrawl, and Last Exit.
This is soul crushing.
Except I am the one doing it to myself while being alone. TV having some 8 hour YouTube video essays playing I don’t really pay attention to, but still somewhat audible. My SteamDeck with Mass Effect, loud enough to understand the dialogue. And my phone playing the Hunger Games audiobook the loudest, because it clearly is the most important thing. This…heals my soul.
The stupid children’s toy “Operation” is my weakness.
