On the final days of the war the Nazi Government had suggested suicide as an option against both the American and the Soviet menace, thousands of Germans followed through, primarily making use of drugs to kill themselves.

On one hand, I understand the decision. The Soviets were anything but restrained, and the Nazis beat that drum as loudly as they could.
On the other hand, with the benefit of hindsight and not being immersed in Nazi propaganda, your chances of getting through the Red Army’s advance and occupation were much higher than, say, with a state policy of industrialized genocide poised against you.
But then you’d end up in eastern Germany 😞
A drab fate, to be sure, but probably better than death.
