Something to keep in mind is that Kagi is sponsoring Russia’s war against Ukraine through their business with Yandex.

that push GOS into unsavoury practices.
Can you elaborate on this?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Anyone know how Google's side loading rules will impact Graphene, e/OS, Fdroid, Lineage, etc?
4·3 days agoGraphene uses Play services, albeit sandboxed. I don’t think MicroG is recommended by them. But maybe I misunderstood your comment.

21·5 days agoWhat sort of attestation, if any, is required? Play Integrity? If so, alternative operating systems like GrapheneOS won’t work. It’s been a problem with a few implementations so far:

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Privacy centric devices stateside for low cost?
10·10 days agoHonestly, the Pixel is probably your best option. Consider getting it second-hand if you can, or try to snag the Pixel 9a on sale.
GrapheneOS has entered a partnership with Motorola, so maybe a cheaper option from their line of phones will be available in the future.
Are you implying that gaming on a 120 Hz 4k OLED TV is somehow bad?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Apple rolls out mandatory UK age verification with iOS 26.4, requiring users to provide a credit card or ID, a first in Europe, after UK government pressure
3·14 days agoGrapheneOS is probably the best choice if you care about privacy nowadays. The only con is it only supports Pixel and future Motorola phones.
If your phone supports something like LineageOS, that’d also be a step up from stock Android or big-tech distributions, although it’s not as good as GrapheneOS.
Yeah, but unfortunately most TVs don’t support DisplayPort. Although that reminds me someone made patches to the Linux kernel to enable 4k@120 Hz through HDMI without color degradation on AMD GPUs. I haven’t heard much about them since they were brought up in media, but if I recall correctly CachyOS included them in their kernel.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Mathieu Comandon Explains His Use of AI in Lutris DevelopmentEnglish
30·14 days agoRegardless of AI, Heroic is a much better alternative unless you need some niche integration that Lutris provides. The Lutris developer is super stubborn about the most strange stuff, like absolutely refusing to upgrade the runtime of the flatpak because of some obscure controller regression. He’d rather see poor performance with super old mesa libraries and poor security for the majority.
But yeah, the heavy AI usage just makes me even more hesitant to use or recommend Lutris.

Like I said earlier, I didn’t say that you or anyone else should boycott Kagi. I merely informed everyone for transparency. It’s up to you how you compromise your morals, because compromise we all do. I can live without Kagi, and therefore I don’t need to pay them. If I can refrain from supporting war and shitty governments, I will do so. That includes avoiding American companies, which I do primarily thorough self-hosting alternatives to big tech software.
Either way, you’re a very exhausting person to communicate with so this will be the last time I respond to your comments.
Yes, boycotting American companies is a good idea.
Kagi pays Yandex to use their API.
Yandex represents about 2% of our total costs and is only one of dozens of sources we use.

We have wildly different definitions of the word discrimination. The fact of the matter is that doing business with Russian companies funds the Russian war. There’s no away around that, and the fact that innocent Russian civilians have to suffer the repercussions of that is tragic, but it’s through no fault of the people choosing to boycott. Throwing accusations of discrimination in this situation is asinine.
Stop with this childish nonsense.
Discriminatory? Are you for real?
So anyone who does business with a Russian company is “sponsoring the Russian war”?
Yes. Russian companies pay taxes to the Russian regime, and the Russian regime uses that tax money to fund their war. Therefore, if you do business with Russian companies, you sponsor the Russian war.
Am I saying that means you shouldn’t pay for the service? No. We can’t boycott everything, but people should at least know where some of their money goes. Where you draw the moral line is entirely up to you.
It’s worth noting that Kagi, the company behind this browser, is sponsoring the Russian war against Ukraine through its business with Yandex.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•CachyOS Is Now the Most Popular Desktop Distro on ProtonDBEnglish
10·25 days agoI’m using NixOS and I have had no problems gaming. Getting the kernel from CachyOS is also easy enough, if you want that.

Apple is pretty decent actually. If I couldn’t use GrapheneOS, I’d go for iOS.
