Sorry, their comment hadn’t been posted when i loaded the thread. Much obliged.

Well, it can take 2-3 hours to brush and floss if I think, “I’ll glance at my phone,” in between.
Glad to see people making videos about this stuff. I hope they continue in that direction and dabble in sharing on a peer tube instance or something similar. Creation is one aspect, but distribution also matters. Talking about breaking free of corporate control loses some credibility when it’s content for- and can only be accessed on- YouTube.
I respectfully disagree. While true that Houdini was one of the first visual effects softwares offering an indie license, it was by no means the only one. Substance comes to mind, before the Adobe acquisition.
The timeline is also unconvincing: a considerable number of years elapsed after Houdini entered the market and Autodesk/Maya offered an indie license. However, is does coincide with better blender documentation and rise in YT content that rapidly grew the blender community.
Houdini can do more than FX, sure, and I’ve consistently heard nothing but good things, but its professional use remains relatively [edit: departmentally] niche. So, it may seem to someone in the niche of FX that Maya is losing ground to Houdini, but on a macro level Blender has the features and price point to threaten a larger portion of Autodesk/Maya’s market share. In lieu of better data, I’ll refer to google trends of the three softwares in which Houdini is a flat line at the bottom. I will gladly consider data to the contrary if you have it.
Either way, my main point was that competition is good, and who is responsible for how much doesn’t change that.
I use youtube less and less because it’s not as information dense as other sources. When I do brave YT, I have a simple css override via stylus to hide thumbnails. It has helped reduce that sad feeling about the human spirit YT leaves me with.
The stylus snippet:
ytd-thumbnail {
background-color: #000000 !important;
display: none;
}
I’m confident Autodesk wouldn’t have introduced indie pricing if it weren’t for Blender’s rise in popularity. Competition is good for everyone (except a company like Autodesk trying to get the highest returns for the least effort).
Autodesk Maya. Autodesk being the company, Maya the software. I disagree with the framing that Blender needs to develop (more) new tools [for the purpose of] competing. Maya is industry standard in animation mostly due to monopolistic practices (EG: purchasing competitors), not innovation or development. Blender needs more money to develop more tools. Full stop. Many professionals have been disappointed with Autodesk’s offerings and development, and look to Blender for innovation.
I’m using xkb and modified the custom layout so RAlt is Altgr and layer 3 places arrow keys under my right hand and various brackets under my left when I hold right alt modifier. Sorry I can’t give more info at the moment. Feel free to message me if you pursue this and hit a wall. I can provide more details this weekend.
[Edit: just saw the wayland info, apologies if that means xkb is out. Honestly don’t know the implications offhand. leaving this comment in case there’s anything useful]
Nice work and congrats on your progress! Being new and uncomfortable with dependencies, this project might be a good opportunity to read and apply chapter 7 of the rust book if you haven’t already. Specifically 7.2 defining modules … and the sections that follow.
As your projects increase complexity it’s really useful to shift chunks around (within main.rs and into other files/directories). Doing it now will make it easier to see the individual parts (vs waiting till a project has a lot going on). It might make dependencies feel less unfamiliar.
“But it’s so convenient to not have the means of production,” says the person who has seen enough ads to become an ad themselves
Thanks for the reply and info! I’m excited to hear links are being considered. I’ll keep an eye on it. Best of luck!
Kudos on the release! And respect for using codeberg.
I’m always on the lookout for a FOSS replacement to my biggest proprietary dependency, Obsidian (some exist, but too many tradeoffs so far). I didn’t see any mention of wiki-style links, is that out of scope? I imagine the encryption makes it complicated.
Also, on the dev side, how has your experience with Tauri been? Have you tinkered with any other rust frameworks? How have you found their documentation?
Does seem odd. Was released November 22, 1988. Sounds like a long production and post-production (possible if not likely with film. all I know is Wayne’s World was shot in less than a month around this era). Still, even more insane to not give XMas day off on a long production, if true.
The plot is trivial, what matters is test screenings and market projections …when all one cares about is making money.
I’ve heard cannabis described as a multiplier and I’ve found that to be true. For me it makes allows me to notice what I’m feeling more (physically and emotionally), food tastes better, I write more, my mood seems elevated, but it has it’s downsides. Around people and in public my anxiety is much higher and like others, my executive functioning and memory gets worse.
I also find my thoughts feel more “linear,” in a way: slower and easier to trace how one thought led to the next (if I’m able to hang onto that thread). It’s easier to observe my thoughts. If I have one thing to sit down and focus on, it’s fantastic. If I’m interacting with a lot of people and having to task switch a lot, it’s a nightmare. Again, that multiplier effect, as I’m quite introverted.
I also don’t get tired from cannabis. I can’t do sativa. Too much anxiety. I go for heavy indicas and even that can light up my brain. If I’m in a space (physical and mental) where I can relax, it can occasionally help. I go for edibles, usually 1:1 THC:CBD; 5mg of THC. I use about once a week in the evening when I have a project I’d like to spend time with and I won’t be bothered.
I was doing that 3 days a week at times. I took a 4 month break while I started my medication for ADHD. Started back up recently. Honestly, I think the cannabis might have a better overall impact. Correcting more data, but I might need to change my meds.
December vibes. More places should just take the month off. Surely the data shows how unproductive most are. Now’s the time to get cozy and rest.
Yes. I encrypt because theft. I know PopOS and Mint make it 1-click ez. …unless of course you want home and root on a separate drives. That scales difficulty real fast. There’s plenty of tutorials, and I managed, but I had to patch together different ones to get a basic setup-- Never mind understanding exactly what I did and repeating it (the latest challenge I’ve been dragging my feet on). I do hope this is an area that sees more development in the near future.
