Yeah, I get that. I treated my reddit account like that. My reddit account was 15 years old and you can do some sleuthing and doxxing and track down my real name if you’re persistent enough. Nowadays I value privacy a bit more, so I just save important stuff to my second brain (these days it’s in Obsidian.md, but I’m not married to a specific app).

  • but then I can just bypass it by forcing my computer off then powering it back on. Then what’s the point of having it?

You already have your answer, so I’ll just add that not every implementation is the same. Our VDI deployment provides virtual desktops to remote users. Their own physical power buttons would only reset their thin client, not the remote workstation that has access to our secure network. If they want to reset that 10 minute timer early, they have to call IT and we can reset the virtual machine from our end after confirming that they’re a valid user. But yes, some software security is trivial to bypass if you have no physical security.

  • Stupid? Maybe if verifying “facts” is your sole metric. I know people who aren’t very media savvy who fall for some stupid propaganda, but they could empty my car’s engine bay and put it back together again and have it cranking the same day. Or you can drop them in any body of water in a 250km radius and they’ll know what fish can be caught there and be able to hook an edible-sized one in half an hour or less. We don’t all have the same skill sets, but we ain’t all “stupid”.

Do you understand how averages work?

If there are 8 billion people on this world and each one has one skeleton in them, then the average number of skeletons is one. If even one of those 8 billion people have two skeletons in them, then the average is slightly more than one.

So the average is more than one for pregnant people, but also for all people as a whole.
