That said, I’m not actually positive it works… it is able to connect to home assistant, so it definitely has local network connectivity, but I haven’t proved to myself that it is actually unable to connect to its remote servers since it isn’t really that big of a deal to me.

The git repo should ignore the venv folder, so when you clone you then create a new one and activate it with those steps.

Then when you are installing requirements with pip, the repo you cloned will likely have a requirements.txt file in it, so you ‘pip install -r requirements.txt’

This article isnt about how emails associated with logins got released in a breach, but that documents that are uploaded to the archive are stamped with the email address of the account that uploaded it and that can be viewed by anyone who downloads the document.

So in standard, everyday use of the site, email addresses are being revealed and are associated with the actions of that person. Like if I upload a copy of the manual for my washing machine or something, which is a more benign example, my email is linked to that document now.

Then combine this with (1) the internet archive says in multiple spots that they dont reveal this info anywhere, and (2) the issue has been raised to the organization, and it becomes more of a specific negligence from them.

Playing games was fine - it was loading things up that has sucked. I haven’t gotten dota up on the SSD yet, but on the HDD it was real clunky and would half-load the landing page and sit there for ~10 seconds.

The biggest difference, though, is that firefox now opens immediately instead of taking ~10 seconds after clicking the icon

Datasette is a neat tool intended to publish static data in a sqlite database on the web with a helpful gui and a bunch of extensions available. I havent come across a good enough reason to do it myself, but may do what you want.

You can spin it up locally and it wont be on the web at all, just accessed via your browser if thats what you want.

If youre up for it, you could stream off of your home desktop with Sunshine and use the laptop just as a light-weight client. Then the requirements for the laptop are a lot less and could potentially play even better games.

I played dota on my old laptop at a friends house while it actually streamed from my home desktop and it worked fine. I dont remember if you need a domain or static IP or anything like that, which may be a barrier. Or if upload speeds just wont allow it

Do you have any sources that go into this? Nothing comes up in my cursory searching…

The culture war is v stupid, yes. But “use signal” is the same as “dont text your friend with a different app at all” with signal dropping sms. They are in a different position that google and apple, so not saying i blame them for dropping, but i did stop using it once it become “another app” instead of how i text.

Does this app not do voicemail? I just got a voicemail and had to reset the standard google phone app as default to listen, then switch back to this one as default.

I had this same question since seeing the post about the Fossify phone app. For phone, calendar, contacts, things like those, i dont see what value the official google apps have (other than syncing to your account, but i can manage that myself). For Messages from Google, tho, there is something they provide in the RCS, if only because they block others from implementing.

So, using Fossify Message, for example, sacrifices something of some actual value here…

I dont think that private corps with tens of thousands of employees can do that at all. Private companies also have committees and working groups and different departments that dont talk to each other (despite the committees), and policies that people follow even though the policy hasnt been good for years.

The boss says “this is what we’re doing” and then it takes years for those hundreds of departments and tens of thousands of people to do it. Or they dont do it, because they disagree with the boss and the boss is far away from any work that they have no idea if people are doing it or not. Or they sorta do it, but then a new boss comes in and has a different plan.

Despite the dictatorship of the owner in a private corporation, actually implementing a thing, especially a new thing, does take a lot of time.

I disagree with his right-wing libertarianism, as many have said. I found him when i was getting into tech privacy stuff and watched it, then youtube started giving me more of the harder weirdos who were a little more fashy. I dont think Mental Outlaw is a facist, dont get me wrong - but the youtube algorithm may send you that direction.

I think his older stuff was better and just had more content in each video. More recent videos (last 6-12 months?) it seems like he’s got two news articles he reads but then he just goes on big tangents to fill space.
