  • Not sure about lust specifically though I suppose it’s possible to hyperfocus on it.

    However, getting off is definitely something ADHD people can feel the urge to self medicate with. It is pretty strong stimulation, activating both dopaminergic and adrenal pathways (I think) which are the two that ADHD meds try to trigger to alleviate symptoms.

    Furthermore, it helps with those under-stimulation days because it is stimulation, but can also help with overstimulation days because sex activates both the sympathetic AND parasympathetic nervous system. (it acts as both an upper and a downer) So it helps you relax and feel less stressed/irritable.

    Sidenote: Nicotine is one of the only drugs that activates both pathways like this and surprise surprise it’s also something I’ve heard several ADHD people use to self medicate with or that they would use to help them focus before they realized they had ADHD.


  • Imagine someone says something rude you want to reply to but don’t/can’t. This is annoying but normally you just move on. Sure maybe you’ll think about it a little while later or maybe while in the shower later that day or maybe it will come back you randomly while laying in bed sometime in the future. Still normal (I think…) and pretty manageable.

    However, with the right (or wrong) kind of neurodivergence, some days it isn’t possible to let go. Even the slightest annoyance will invade your focus the entire rest of the day. You can’t do anything because you’re just pissed about that thing, or pissed that you’re still thinking about that dumb thing for no reason and can’t get it out of your head. You get mad at being mad. Anger spiral ensues.

    Rage wells within you as your frustration rises because you’re trying to focus on other things and this annoyance isn’t worth your time, but you can’t stop because you’re not in control. It’s like a song stuck in your head but even harder to get rid of.

    If you’re like me, self destructive fantasies play in your mind to relieve the feeling. This does work but it takes time. Once the anger spiral is gone you feel dumb because like why the fuck did I just spend four fucking hours imagining global conquest because I tripped over my words answering a question in lecture this morning?

    Anyway I think this is kind of related to hyper focus. Basically your mind decides—without and/or against your will—to focus on something that angers you all day. You feel the desire to do something about it, but you can’t, and you can’t even really stop focusing on it no matter what you try, so you just get more mad.

    Unfortunately it often happens when I’m stressed to begin with because I have tasks I need to get done, but then that stress just feeds the fire. Meditation might be helpful but the most effective option I’ve found is to put on phonk or metal or vocaloid songs that are very fast and loud or violent then imagine acting on my anger till I’ve exhausted all the rage. Once it feels boring to stay mad, I can get back to doing my tasks. Again, this takes time and is probably not the healthiest way to cope, but it works for me so maybe it’ll work for other ADHD peeps who want a solution.



  • No emotions are communicable as emotions are qualia. However you can describe an experience or experiences that give you similar emotions, and if the other person feels quallia for those experiences they will assume you have the same.

    Is your red the same as mine? We cannot ever say. But does your red happen when you see something I’d also call red? Most likely (unless you’re color blind).

    The same is true of emotions. Maybe when you lose a loved one, you feel the feeling I do when I’ve accidentally hurt someone in a way I feel I can’t undo. Both are pain, but we will never know if the pain we feel for any specific experiences are the same because all feelings are incommunicable.

    Now emotions typically have physical effects too and it is likely that people with similar bodies have some sort of qualia you can reference using the experiences that are associated with them “I feel cold” “I feel weak” “my body feels heavy” etc. Or maybe someone already can predict that they’d feel a specific qualia if they went through what you describe, but that’s never guaranteed.

    Unfortunately you don’t have the option of verbal communication with a cat, but you do have physical effects. Furthermore, emotions arise from experiences yes? Remember how you can assume someone has a qualia for cold because they’re human and you’re human so if you experience a qualia corresponding to cold then likely so do they?

    Well ennui is listlessness caused by lack of stimuli yes? We most likely feel it because we’re “predators” and have the desire for stimuli and engagement. The same can be said of cats. Ergo, it is entirely possible they could feel an emotion corresponding to it just like us. I would be more surprised if most animals did not feel boredom.



  • Not to be that guy, but science is basically anything that gets studied/tested/researched. If you have the ability to cast spells and someone notices similarities and tries to categorize spells, that’s science. Studying how spells are made would be science. Studying the limitation of spells would be science. Testing news spells would be science. Etc.

    So the big question is really how well understood is the science of magic in your world?

    Does anyone actually know how it works or is it more like quantum mechanics with lots of theories but each still has limitations?

    If magic is widespread and the beings using it are curious, chances are they’ve experimented with it and possibly taken notes about their experiments.

    If magic offers great advantages then knowledge of it might be closely guarded by practitioners and not easily learned.

    If magic can only be practiced by a certain species/family/etc. then general knowledge of how magic works could be much less accessible to the general population making it much more mysterious.

    If not, then it’s likely there are schools that teach it to those who can use it and even those who can’t use it would likely still be taught about it. I mean, if you’re an engineer and you want to shape titanium and some spell can do that more easily than a mill or lathe, you’re going to want to know.

    If you can heal with magic, non magic doctors would still want to be in the know about what can or can’t be cured with either medicine or magic.

    If you mean science as in advanced physics or having digital devices, things will get more complicated if you want to make a logically consistent world. Like very complicated to the point it might take the joy out of world building. For example…

    If there’s a spell that creates light/heat, where does the energy come from? You either violate thermodynamics or that energy comes from somewhere. OR the energy disappears after a while which might be a cool thing to think about.

    If there’s a spell that freezes things, it violates the laws of thermodynamics in a big way unless more heat (entropy) is generated somewhere else. If this generation somewhere else is somewhere really far away, you can create an infinite power source pretty easily.

    Arguably teleportation may or may not violate relativity which, fun fact, might be the reason gold is gold colored and not silver colored so if you break relativity you might break some weird shit from the color of chemicals to the laws that hold your proteins together.

    If magic has any visual effects, like an aura, it means magic interacts with the electromagnetic fields in a way that generates or manipulates photons. This could fuck up lots of digital stuff but also might be dangerous because color corresponds to frequency. If you can change the frequency could certain spells emit gamma radiation? Do invisible spells produce infrared or UV? If some spells interact with photons but some don’t then why?

    Furthermore, air is a substance. If you cast a spell that explodes objects how does the spell know when it hits the object and not an air molecule? If the spell isn’t instant why does it have a specific speed? If it’s effected by matter then would casting a spell under water go slower? Does water explode if you cast an explosion while in it or does the spell hit the nearest solid before causing an effect?

    If magic doesn’t interact with matter between the caster and the object, what medium transfers the information? What particles carry the magic force(s)? If magic particles don’t interact with physical matter how does a being made of that matter cast a spell? How does the being specify a target?

    If spells have incantations, what makes those work? Can any sound create magic? Could a parrot accidentally cast a spell? If it’s in a specific language, why? What beings created that language? If magic just randomly happens to be a set of sounds that humans can make that seems rather coincidental yes?

    If only certain creatures/races/families can use magic, why? How does the genetics of a being effect if it can or can’t interact with a fundamental field of this universe (magic)?

    If it is genetic or physical in any way, with enough scientific study it should be possible to replicate it or remove it.

    If it is metaphysical like it comes from the ‘soul’ then religion and science will overlap. Furthermore beings would likely use this to be prejudiced against any living thing that can’t do magic.

    If all living things can do magic what about viruses? What about single celled bacteria? What specifically defines “living” in the context of magic and by what mechanism do those criteria enable the use of magic?

    Anyway, the point is that if you try to get to technical and logical, it’s going to become a pain. The best bet, in my opinion, is to try avoiding the abundance of magic. If magic existed in our universe it would already have multiple scientific disciplines devoted to it. You’d be able to major in magic but more importantly, most of the general population would know fundamental things about magic and its limitations which means you’d likely need to explain your magic system more.

    If you don’t want to get technical it might be best to not let your characters get technical. Keeping the knowledge of magic secretive/mysterious would help with this.

    Or you can get completely lost in the world building and start writing out how many different magical fields there’d need to be and how they interact with elementary particles and how the thermodynamics of spells is rectified by events in those fields giving the illusion that thermodynamics was violated while still preserving the typical physics required for chemistry to remain unchanged and then think to yourself wait, wasn’t I going to write a story? Why am I researching theoretical math?

    One of the effects of me getting medicated is being able to make phone calls and schedule meetings. Do I still hate that everyone would rather I call and stumble over my words and forget what I’m going to say rather than let me write an email that allows me to clearly and concisely ask my questions? Yes, fuck them for doing that. Hell, it’s stupid and inefficient to try and find times your schedules are both open to have a meeting when you could just write a fucking email and reply to it when your schedule allows. But yeah, anyway, now I actually have enough executive function to make those phone calls and meetings when I have to.

    Also here’s a reminder to take your meds because I definitely would have forgotten to take mine if I hadn’t seen this post and remembered.


  • Bro I know the feeling. I’m still in uni, but I’ll have my life put together, getting homework done on time, cleaning regularly etc. and then there’ll be like something wrong with one of my grades and I procrastinate writing the email to my professor for no reason at all and suddenly I can’t do anything and I get overwhelmed by everything I’m not doing and that just makes me dread doing anything.

    Anyway, sorry you’re feeling depressed right now. But if you want my opinion, if it’s impacting your life negatively, I don’t think it matters if someone has it worse than you. If your life could be better, that’s what matters.

    Honestly, finding a psychiatrist and setting up the appointment was probably the hardest part of getting medicated. I put it off for multiple years even though I knew that I probably had ADHD, but let me tell you, that first day on my meds, sitting in class and realizing I am actually getting information out of the lecture, it was so weird. Like wow people actually learn things in class? I can actually write emails and make phone calls without having to build up the motivation over several days? I regret not doing it sooner.

    Anyway, if you feel like medication would help, once you get your “pinball machine” running again, I think getting diagnosed may be worth a try. You deserve to try and make your life better just as much as others do, even if you don’t have it as bad as they do.


  • Yeah healthcare is fucked (in the USA at least). But yeah I take them as needed. I’ve been taking them most everyday for a while though because I’m making some major life changes right now. Surprisingly they do help with anxiety and depression too ig. Like I get anxious about doing stuff and then I do the stuff and I’m less anxious.

    Tasks seem much less stressful when you know you can actually complete them.

    Also, I would try out the Strattera if I were in your position even if you don’t think it will work. Worst case scenario you can say “this isn’t working for me” and maybe get something else, and if that doesn’t work it’s not like you’re worse off for having tried it. But best case scenario it could work! Who knows, it’s possible it could be the best drug for you. Even if it only works a tiny bit that’s still better than nothing yeah?

    If you can’t get prescribed meds, I’d probably try caffeine pills. I used to use Bang energy drinks before taking tests before I got medicated. Not the healthiest thing, I bet caffeine pills are probably better, but whatever works right?

    Seriously though, I’m on 15mg adderall (dextrin-amp amphetamine) twice a day. I was on methylphenidate originally (started at 20mg ramped up to 60mg) but it made me kind of sick to my stomach and wore off fast. Upping the dose made it last longer but also made it feel worse physically

    Everyone warned me that adderall would be much stronger and have a risk of addiction, but that’s mostly been the opposite of my experience. Even compared to 10mg of methylphenidate it seems softer.

    It sits better in my stomach, doesn’t make me as anxious, doesn’t give me a high, and I still have to like force myself to take it. Also I haven’t noticed any withdrawal symptoms when I’ve abruptly stopped taking them.

    Only issue is that I’m not hungry and if I take them too late in the day it will keep me awake. But that’s definitely worth the ability to actually do stuff lol

    If you get prescribed meds, you’ll probably get methylphenidate and it might work for you. My advice is dont be afraid to ask to try different meds if they aren’t working for you. Everyone is different, some people I know take like combinations of different meds throughout the day. Maybe you’ll be like that or maybe the first meds you try will work perfectly.

    But you won’t know till you try and in my opinion it’s better to know a medication doesn’t work than to miss out on something that could vastly improve your life.

    Also sorry this is long, I’m kind of just writing stuff I wish someone had told me when I started.

    I did not like the idea of needing to take meds everyday. I didn’t want to have to become dependent on medication. I was afraid that I’d get addicted or that it’d be detrimental to my health. But honestly, I’m very very glad I tried this.

    Basically none of my fears happened. I don’t need to take my meds everyday, I just know that if I do I’ll probably be more productive. So I take them when I know I have stuff that needs doing that day.

    I am not dependent on my meds. I have the opposite problem where I irrationally just don’t want to take them or I procrastinate taking them. I’m not addicted at all.

    But the positive effects are there. Even on the meds that made me super anxious and kind of sick I was able to go from the lowest 3% in one of my classes to the top 10% last semester.

    Also if you get anxiety from your meds, especially the physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, beta blockers can help with that. I got prescribed propranolol and even 5mg of it when taken with my meds helped mitigate the whole fight or flight anxiety from my meds.

    What’s weird is that now I’m on supposedly stronger meds I haven’t really felt the need to take them much.

    Anyway, my advice is to try it out, and if the meds don’t work for you, or if they do but they have enough negative effects that you can’t bring yourself to take them, try to find new ones. Try to find meds or med combinations that work and when you do, it will change your life for the better.


  • Wow. You just made me realize these meds work lol. It doesn’t feel all that different but yeah the past few weeks I’ve not really done this very much at all. Like how in the fuck have I just been doing all my tasks? And how did I not realize it till just now?

    I guess it hasn’t worked on all my tasks. I definitely need to clean my room and do laundry but like my academic tasks and other stuff like accomplishing the plans I make has been super easy.

    Also, plans? I’ve just been making plans and I actually remember to look at them. Like it just happens spontaneously now. Weird. Weird shit.

  • Wait. I just realized energy also creates a gravitational pull, and the death star’s whole thing is destroying a planet right? That’s got to take a huuuge amount of energy because the explosion has to massively overcome the gravity holding the target together.

    A quick google search says you’d need 10^32 Joules to blow up the earth. E=mc2 so dividing that energy by the speed of light squared gives about 1.1e15 kg of equivalent mass which is relatively small compared to earths mass (6e24) but still large.

    For reference, if the radius of the Death Star was 1000m you’d get about 5.2m/s2 acceleration from just that energy in its core.

    But if the Death Star is able to blow up multiple planets, then the energy it has to have on hand goes up. So if the Death Star contains enough energy to blow up 5.4 billion planets, then just that stored energy would have nearly equivalent “mass” to the earth.

    But gravitational acceleration is inversely proportional to distance squared. So since the Death Star is small, you wouldn’t need that much energy to get earth gravity. If we assume the Death Star has about a 160km radius, then you’d only need enough stored energy to blow up ~45,000 earths to get a surface gravity of 9.1m/s2.

    This gravity would increase as you got closer to the core or whatever part stores all that energy. But if you spread that energy out a bit you could probably extend how large the earth-like gravity range in the station would be.

    The mass of the structure itself would contribute to the gravity too so that 45,000 is probably an overestimate.

    TL;DR: From rough math in my head, assuming a radius of 160km, point mass, and ignoring the mass of the structure, you’d only need to store ~5e19 J of energy in the Death Star to get earth like gravity on the surface. That is approximately the amount of energy required to blow up 45,000 earths



  • Lately I’ve started forcing myself to do nothing during those moments, like literally nothing. I set a timer for an hour and then turn off my phone and computer and lay down or just sit and kind of stare at a wall.

    The boredom is horrible but the good news is that by the end of the hour, usually my mind has come up with a few things it would rather do than nothing.

    Also, sometimes I can’t make it the full hour doing nothing but I only let myself do productive/healthy things like reading or doing dishes. It’s not really enjoyable but by the end of the hour it does feel slightly good that I was slightly productive.

    Idk if it’ll work for you and idk if I’ll be able to keep doing it, but maybe it’s worth a shot. Tell me how it goes if you try it lol.
