I sat down with my partner last night, to help him pick out an instance to join. He said he wasn’t unixy enough to feel at home on SDF.

I feel comfortable with his decision to join dbzer0. Folks from dbzer0 seem like good sorts, and somehow none of y’all have pissed me off enough to get added to my block list.

Whenever I get into an argument with someone on the Internet and I keep arguing with them past the point I should stop (it’s useless or I’m just wicked frustrated) I set up a monthly donation to something that would piss them off. And that’s why I have monthly donations to Sesame Street, the ACLU, and the SPLC.

I picked up Stranded: Alien Dawn on Humble Bundle a few months back and it scratches the same itch. I know I’m going back to Rimworld soon, but S:AD has prettier graphics and similar gameplay. You can also build multi-story buildings. It’s been a good change of pace for me.

Yep, not everyone is for everyone and that’s a good thing. No sense in hiding that you’re someone who communicates in a not-for-everyone way.

Or, if you have an inkling that you won’t split everything evenly, at least talk to the kids about it. My mom has 2 kids. She’s told me she’s giving a greater proportion to my brother and I’m ok with that.

My brother is a drug addicted felon and has always needed/gotten more support than I have needed/gotten.

I’m distant from my mom by choice (we didn’t have a healthy relationship) and I’m a functioning adult with a lovely partner, a stable job, and a competent therapist.

Mom’s told me she’s putting things into a trust for benefit of my brother, but I don’t know that she’s done that and it’s not my problem.

Anyways, I guess the takeaway is it’s ok for your kids to think dividing the inheritance unevenly means you love them unevenly if they’re not wrong.

I finally blocked my mom’s phone number earlier this month. It’s only taken me 7 years since she blew up at me in a way she couldn’t/wouldn’t take back.

It can be a slow journey and you might question it as you go, but it’s worthwhile. And more people than you might expect are estranged from their families. I used to worry that my IRL acquaintances and friends would judge me for it, but nope.

My biggest bit of advice to people buying their elderly parents tech: pick an OS and stick to it. I’m tired of nice old ladies coming in with an iPhone and an Android tablet, looking for help. They’re fine with one or the other OS. Swapping confuses them.

I’m disappointed that Librarian isn’t on the list. We’re super trustworthy! Edit: some librarians might count as civil servants. I’m tbh not sure where that line is.

Oh! I also baked a pizza and it was really tasty. Pup didn’t get pizza, but did get oven-dried fish skins and he’s really happy about that.

That was me when I worked in an office with a fancy coffee maker. Current place I’m down to maybe 2 cups (well, they’re XL, but there’s only 2 of them!)

It is hard to find onion-free chicken stock. My dog goes nuts for chicken but is a fussy eater otherwise, so we’re always on the lookout for dog-friendly stock to add to his kibble.

I don’t eat pig and Applebee’s adds bacon to their Mac and cheese. They list like 8 different cheeses in the description but don’t mention the bacon. Parents didn’t want me to make a fuss so I ate it. That was not fun. (This was years ago, ymmv, I don’t talk to those parents anymore because reasons.)

Me and mine have various food sensitivities (latex, nightshades, pork). I use an android app “fig” to check things at the grocery store–scan the barcode and Fig tells me who shouldn’t eat it and why. It does smart things like label “spices” as yellow because maybe it’s peppers maybe it’s not. The free version is sufficient for one person. The paid version lets you add more profiles.

That’s effectively what I had as an undergrad and it was lovely. Wednesdays were (mostly) reserved for labs, so if you weren’t taking chemistry or another class with a lab, you had Wednesdays to sleep in. I rather miss that.

TBH, I’m not convinced regular Spam is trying to act like meat. Sometimes people just want a hunk of spiced protein.

I wish they would. It might mean fewer fire alarms tripped by vapes. (I work in a college library and it’s not funny have to evacuate the building just because someone decided to vape in a study room.)

Walk someone else through editing a config file on the command-line over screenshare? Nano. Omg nano is your friend.

The problem with using nano for years is that I now try using nano shortcuts in other programs. Random new windows opening is confusing, until you figure out Ctrl+o isn’t save in that program. Then it’s just annoying because you still have your inappropriate muscle memory.

About 18x8 inches. Not to worry, I have a classroom-sized whiteboard as a backup.
