Coming at this from the JS world… Why the heck would 2 projects share the same library? Seems like a pretty stupid idea that opens you up to a ton of issues, so what, you can save 200kb on you hard drive?

I’m no Python expert either and yeah, from an outsider’s perspective it seems needlessly confusing. easy_install that’s never been easy, pip that should absolutely be put on a Performance Improvement Plan, and now this venv nonsense.

You can criticize javascript’s ridiculous dependencies all you want (left-pad?), but one thing that they absolutely got right is how to manage them. Everything’s in node_modules and that’s it. Yeah, you might get eleven copies of left-pad on your system, but you know what you NEVER get? Version conflicts between projects you’re working on.

There’s also a Kirkland near Montreal, so it could be Canada. But as it’s already been mentioned, it has nothing to do with location in this case.

For self-hosting purposes, Docker = lightweight disposable VMs that are configured via docker-compose.yml. All important data should be in “volumes”, which are just shared folders between the host and the container.

The end result is that you can delete and re-create containers at any time and they should just pick up where they left off from the data that’s in these volumes.

Each individual published image has some paths they want to use for that; everything is usually specified in their example docker-compose files.

If you’re not a dev, don’t even try to understand Dockerfiles, it’s not for you.

It’s not quite as point-and-click, but I’m using Docker for that because Yunohost kept messing up updates. Most server apps will have some instructions on how to run them in docker, especially a docker-compose.yml file, so you don’t have to rely on the Yunohost team to package said app.

The way I do it is that I put each suggested compose file in their own file, and import them in my main docker-compose.yml file like this:

include:
    - syncthing.yml

Then just run docker compose pull && docker compose up -d every time you change something or want to update your apps, and you’re good to go.

Software updates in particular are waaaaaayyy easier on Docker than Yunohost.

The lining in question is very thin (akin to a layer of paint) and just burns up when the cans are re-melted.

Recycling beer bottles is indeed pretty easy once you get them to the processing center intact, but it’s getting there that’s the hard part. They’re fragile, pretty heavy and don’t stack well unless you put them in some form of packaging.

Once they’re broken, they’re basically useless; glass isn’t recycled much except as grit material for sandpaper; re-melting it is resource-intensive and sensitive to impurities.

To any non-js dev taking this too seriously: A good half of the technologies mentioned in this meme are redundant, you only need to learn one of them (in addition to the language). It’s like complaining that there are too many Linux distributions to learn: you don’t, you just pick one and go with it.

They drive on the left in the Bahamas too, so they mostly import Japanese cars, but there’s a lot of American cars and golf carts, so the driver can be any side…

I use Canadian Multilingual on a ISO-style keyboard, mostly because my main language is French and typing accents on a US keyboard is horrible.

Coding makes a hefty use of Alt (“option” on mac), but they’re relatively well-placed (see the labels on the bottom-right of the keys in the pic)

My main annoyance with it is that the ANSI-style keyboard puts “ù” to the left of “1”, instead of the “/” you get on that key on a ISO keyboard (where ù is between the left shift and z). You can see how annoying this would be when programming or using the command-line. And of course, Apple stores only stock MacBooks with ANSI keyboards…

I got a “manual” Breville espresso machine (Barista Express), and honestly it’s not that many steps compared to a full auto like my mom’s Jura. I just have to move the portafilter to the grinder, tamp, and put it back into the showerhead. Meanwhile, my mom has to fill up the tank, the coffee hopper and empty the grounds bin every ~5 cups… Not convinced it’s worth 2x the price, and I can actually make better espresso on my machine.

I have 4 kids and I don’t want to pay over 100k for a car. Believe it or not, there is currently no EV option on the market. It’s looking like the EV9 will be the first…

As a beginner you don’t see the benefits as it is indeed JS with extra steps. It’s not worth it for small projects and prototypes, but once you start having larger projects where you need to refactor something, you’ll see the benefits.

Writing passwords down isn’t that bad, actually. We humans are very good at securing little pieces of paper; just put the one you wrote your password on with the other valuable pieces of paper, in your wallet.

It’s “sticking the post-it note to the computer screen” that’s the problem.

I use famous computer scientists. Torvalds, Kernighan, Ritchie, Woz (for the MacBook). My most recent one was bought in Hampton VA, so I named it kjohnson after Katherine Johnson (as seen in the movie Hidden Figures, she used to work at the NASA facility in Hampton).

Yeah, good code should explain the “what” without the need for comments. Good comments explain the “why”.

I just never entered my Wifi details into my smart TV. I only use the HDMI inputs on it anyway, so it behaves like a dumb one. It’s a RCA TV from Walmart, if anyone is wondering.

I just got into Factorio, and I’m lucky I have other stuff going on in my life, because it’s such a big rabbit hole I don’t think I’d come out! I never played it or even knew what the game was about, but the announcement last week about the space expansion got me to download the demo.
