  • I did something similar just the other day.

As a kid I really enjoyed Populous The Beginning. I only ever had the demo version. I later bought the game on GOG, but it never ran that well on my computer. You had to use software based graphics acceleration so it didn’t look right, would have issues with the sound, and crash fairly often.

Tried it through Lutris the other day and it just works. Flawlessly. The graphics look right, there are no audio distortions, and so far I’ve not crashed at all. I’d like to figure out how to get it to run in windowed mode, and then I’ll be satisfied.

    Big win for WINE.

  • Yeah, I almost burned out a couple years back and the causes were way more complicated than just getting the right work assigned.

I’d cut ties with my abusive mother. I was saddled with debt from living with her. My economy wasn’t quite working out. I was falling behind on work. Caught Covid, which screwed with my heart so my health deteriorated really rapidly. I wasn’t given the opportunity to work from home and the sum of it all just wore me down.

The tasks weren’t the problem, honestly.

  • This is an interesting read. English isn’t my native language, and while I’m quite proficient, I lack a lot of cultural context, particularly when it comes to American English. My partner is American, and through/with them I’ve learned a lot of problematic phrases and expressions. It’s baffling just how much language is used to dehumanise, other, and discriminate against people.

That’s not to say it doesn’t happen in my native tongue, it definitely does, but I guess it’s more baffling when it’s something that’s unfamiliar to you.

Marijuana obviously sounds like it’s rooted in Spanish, but I never thought much about it. If you’d asked me, I’d just wager a guess that it’s the Spanish term for it. I hate how oftentimes when I start poking at these preconceived notions, an uglier reality reveals itself. It’s never as benign as I initially believe.

  • The thing that trips me up most about this subject is that 140 years ago, pork fat was very good for seasoning cast iron. Today, it isn’t, because the composition of the fat has changed significantly.

That sounds very interesting! Is it because of the way pigs are raised now compared to back then? They eat way fewer babies now, I bet.
