  • Well you need to put a fair amount in for a long time to get that millionair. If you are 20 now you can get there by 40 by maxing out your 401h, but if you are 75 now maxing out the 401k may not have got you there. Many young people have student loans so they can’t max out the 401k and have enough to live. There is also saving for a house in there. And only about 50% even have a 401k option - ira limits are such that I’m not sure you can get to a million with them. Many people also don’t make much even if you get a 401k at fast food (30 years ago they gave you that after 10 years in the store I worked in - when you maxed out and didn’t get raises)

last but perhaps most important there is opportnity cost. several of my classmates have died in accidents long before they could retire. death rates from non accidents start to raise around 60-65 so even if you retire you may not have long to enjoy that wealth. For all of the above people they should have saved zero and enjoyed life young. Of course odds are you will retire but don’t pin all your hopes on life after, start living now. Even if God tells you that you will live to 100, your body will start to have issuse starting between 40 and 55 - there are some activites it will be too late if you don’t do them young - so go climb that mountain if you want.

  • There are a number of jobs that count various community contributions in your review. This is a very large topic - write a paper in a major journal, give a speech at a conference, submit high profile bug reports - you can get a large raise for it. (the worry of course is that you get a reputation and thus someone gives you a great offer so if they want to keep you they better pay enough that you won’t leave). Exactly what gets you those promotions/raises isn’t clear in part because they need flexibility for someone who honestly discovers a new way to get that reputation and thus they have to give them a promotion. People who don’t deserve the promotion see the policy in place and look for ways to cheat themselves to a promotion they don’t deserve.

  • right to work means you can have a job in a union shop without joining the union.

My grandpa was a snow plow driver for the state of MN (retired sometimes in the 1990s), but as a republican was always opposed to the union. He still paid union dues, but they were reduced and kept in a separate fund by the union and only used for contract negotiations (important for him - he was a big republican and the union political funds of course donates to democrats). Since he wasn’t a member of the union he couldn’t vote on union leadership, but the leadership called him one of their best people there because he always attended the union meetings where contacts were discussed. As you can start to see not being a union member when there is a union is really complex weird. I’m sure there is more about this that I don’t know about (one obvious thing - what if they voted to go on strike)

  • Language is defined by how it is used. You cannot be better than the natives who are using the language. You can use it correctly according to some book and often that book as written by smart people who are avoiding real issues with the language as it is used. It would in those cases be beneficial to everyone if they would follow that book, but if they don’t and you do it makes you wrong and a worse speaker.

In English there is nobody who is authorized to write such a book - many try but they don’t agree with each others. Most have little influence on the real world.

In French and Spanish (I do not know about any other languages) there are organizations who are blessed by law with the ability to define the language and they do have legal power to force how people speak. They are sometimes forced to accept a “bad” addition because everyone is using it to the point where they cannot fight it despite the power of law they have behind them.

You cannot say your English is better than many Americans. That makes no sense. Unless you specifically mean English as it is spoken in some other part of the world. There are several different major ways English is spoken in the US, Australia has their own way of speaking (I don’t know if this is shared with New Zealand or if they are different), and England has many different ways of speaking the same language. However if you are in some part of the world where a significant number of people speak a language from birth you cannot be better than them at it . India doesn’t have many native speakers, but some native speakers are raising their kids English first and so you can probably find a significant population there that is native and has very different ways of speaking.
