  • I understand why people always say things like this. It’s the not having a choice that ruins eternity. Fortunately it seems that such a fate is physically impossible in this reality. Even if you were made of the most durable possible material, you would still fundamentally be composed of baryonic matter, which means if you fell into a star, collided with a celestial object at relativistic speed, or fell into a black hole, you would surely die. There is always a way out for an enterprising immortal, and afterwards sweet nothing.

  • I mean fixing these things can definitely increase sales, but you’re right not in the sense that they are directly marketable. The thing that makes games really blow up is word of mouth, people recommending them to their friends, and you get that best by making a game with overall quality. It’s basically a given at this point that Bethesda games are buggy messes that get fixed by modders. Every time you have a major bug, game crash, or save corruption it takes you out of the world and forces you to remember you’re playing a game that barely works, which makes you like it less. All of this hurts sales, if not today in the future. So yeah, they probably aren’t prioritized by management, but management is wrong. They often are.

  • Yeah to be honest what strikes me the most about companies like Bethesda is just how little they’ve improved over the decades. There’s nothing stopping them from making major improvements like removing loading screens, adding vehicles finally (I wonder if the ships are really a hat like the train in fallout 3), fixing the buggy ass collisions and physics, or any number of dumb shits they just keep leaving in game after game. It really speaks to the institutional inertia and spaghetti mess their code must be.

  • In my experience this most often comes from a failure to perform routine maintenance, and Windows being a bloated rotting whale, decaying on the beach, slowly expanding and spreading its horrid filth across the entire system. Give your computer a new life by cleaning out all the dust, reapplying thermal paste to the CPU, oiling fan bearings, and installing a lightweight Linux distro, or at least a fresh whale carcass (clean windows install).

  • For some history, the original DOTA was a custom map in Warcraft 3. It pretty much defined the moba genre. From there lots of clones were created, and eventually some were made into full games. League of Legends is one of those, and became the most popular. So yes, they’re all just Warcraft 3 with only the hero parts.

  • I’m pretty sure we can find more uses for ocean salt. At the amounts we’re talking about people will find uses for it. One of the things people tend to ignore is that ocean water contains a lot more than just salt. It also contains metals and organic compounds. Looking over the Wikipedia article there is a significant component of magnesium, sulpher, calcium, potassium, and bromine. There are even industries devoted to extracting sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium from sea water. If we substantially increase the desalination of sea water we could significantly reduce the cost of extracting them. With the amount of brine you’re talking about it would pretty much be free to anyone who could find a use for it, since the alternative is diluting it and pumping it back into the ocean, which is pure cost. At that scale you could likely also extract trace components in significant quantities. The page mentions lithium and uranium were attempted in the past, with uranium never seeing industrial scale due to it being too expensive, but economies of scale and all that.
