HOLD UP
If I’m in an elevator alone with a woman or something I will usually just give a friendly nod and adopt a very relaxed posture, like leaning against the wall. The youtuber Contrapoints talked about this exact scenario in one of her videos (a black man whistling in the elevator so she wouldn’t feel scared) and it made me more aware of it.
Go for it dude. I’ve been working out ny whole life and have never paid for a gym membership (I used the gym at college, then at my various apartments, and then when I got a house I set up a home gym). You can get an awesome workout in with nothing more than some free weights, a bench and a little creativity. You mention being a “total novice,” but I feel like most people that go to a gym are working out on their own anyways so unless you’re thinking of getting a personal trainer there’s really not much difference. If you have any questions about form just take a look on YouTube.
The other factor is, what will motivate you to exercise more? For me, it’s the convenience of knowing i can just walk into a room in my house and work out. Whereas I know some people that are more motivated by group exercise classes. So you’ll have to figure that out yourself.
How did FDR feel about gay rights? Economically he was to the left but socially he was way to the right. Sanders, sure, but I meant in a general election.
Kamala Harris and Biden before her ran on the most liberal platform in history
Are you talking about Furiosa the spinoff movie or Furiosa in Mad Max? I have never heard a single complaint about Furiosa in Mad Max
Titanic literally the box office champ for a decade with a female lead (close to 50-50 to be fair). Terminator 2 as well, and Mad Max Fury road, 2 of the greatest action movies of all time (you can fight me but, name aside, that story is all about Furiosa). Those movies work because the female leads are just good. The selling point isn’t that they have women in them, the selling point is they are really really good movies.
Edit: and Kill Bill, where a lot of critics call The Bride (the lead of the movie) the greatest movie character of all time.
I mean, Nvidia isn’t really out, they went from making a relatively niche tech product to the world’s most in-demand tech product by being in the right place at the right time with AI and crypto. At worst they will be back where they started
You would say there is overwhelming evidence that Musk is a Nazi? I’d like to see it.
No don’t you get what I’m saying? Let’s say my acquaintance Jim is a Nazi. I, mistakenly, think he is not a Nazi. Someone calls Jim a Nazi and I say, “no, Jim’s cool, he’s not like that”. That would make me WRONG. It would not make me a NAZI. People get fooled all the time, a fact everyone in this thread seems to be forgetting, and that fallibility applies just as much to Musk’s accusers as his defenders.
I do think he wasn’t zeig heiling. So do most people in the real world who aren’t hooked in to leftist social media 24/7.
Anyways you’re missing the point. The point is that OPs brother thinks Musk didn’t do it. So are you really going to cut someone out of you life for having the majority opinion that someone isnt a Nazi and therefore is defensible?
“You cannot be a good person until you actively work for the liberation of people, instead of voting against their rights.”
“OK what if you think fetuses are people”
“But they arent”
“But I think they are, so I think I am morally righteous”
“But they aren’t and therefore you are a bad person”
Just using abortion as an example… I am strongly pro-choice myself but I dont think people are bad just because they are pro-life. Misguided? Sure, but thats hugely different than being evil. There is a ton of space in society for good people to have different political views. The notion that everyone who disagrees with you politically is a bad person is childish.
So according to you his brother is wrong. He made a mistake in interpereting a hand gesture. You would cut him out of your family for that?
As far as the Musk thing goes: I won’t even get into whether or not Musk was really trying to do a Nazi salute. Personally, I don’t think he was, Musk denies it, plenty of Jewish people and Jewish advocacy groups also say they don’t think it was intentional. But the important thing is, your brother doesn’t think it was intentional. So, at worst, he has committed the crime of being naive, and there’s a very good chance that he’s right and you’re wrong. If he said, yes Musk did a Nazi salute on purpose and then defended that, that would be way over the line. But honestly he sounds like a pretty run of the mill libertarian/conservative. And I will die on the hill that the vast majority of libertarians and conservatives are good people, even if I disagree with them politically.
Officially though none of that is canon right?
Yeah I guess you’re right. Both sides have been pretty…apocalyptic lately.
The reason I singled out leftists is that over the last couple decades, in the ideological struggle between socialists and capitalists… the capitalists pretty much won. There are are still some holdouts around the world but in general leftists are left on the outside looking in as the capitalist-led world grows more prosperous (and lots of bad things too, I’m not trying to play it off as capitalist good socialist bad). But in their position, all leftists can really do is criticize the status quo. And, again, there are plenty of valid criticisms to make, but because they are removed from power leftists can’t do very much “look at the good things socialism is doing,” it’s 99% “look at all the bad things capitalism is doing”. At least in the US/Western Europe.
The right-wing can at least say things like “the economy is doing well” and “technology is advancing due to [Company]'s breakthrough” in between fear-mongering about immigration.
Reading through all the other doomposts I felt obligated to share my view.
I read national/international news every day, and I’m still optimistic about humanity’s future.
First off, I don’t bother with local news at all. That really is just a cesspool of crime reporting. My dad summarized local news pretty well: “someone was murdered today, and heres some footage of blood on the pavement.”
As far as national and international news goes, I read it because I think it’s interesting and it’s good to stay informed, but you can’t use it as a barometer for how the world’s doing, because news is just inherently negative. It doesn’t mean the world is actually doing bad!
Which of the following do you think would get reported as a headline?
“Indonesia enjoys another year without a tsunami”
“Thousand killed as tsunami ravages Indonesian coast”
“Global poverty rate continues slow, steady decline”
“Millions at risk of starvation as African crops fail”
“Good news, no new deadly infectious diseases this year”
“Scientists raise alarm over spread of bird flu”
I think maybe it’s helpful to think of the news not as objective reporting on the state of the world but rather like a police blotter that just logs bad things that have happened. And I think it’s perfectly fine to tune it out and just live your life. If you’re interested in a particular issue, like homelessness or an election maybe look at a less sensational information source like Wikipedia or something.
Also, just a little mini-rant: the two types of people who are most negative about the state of the world are religious missionaries and leftists. Because in order to convince you that the world needs a savior they have to convince you that we aren’t on a path to do it ourselves. So, maybe steer clear of news on Lemmy as well haha
Look if companies could implement successful anticheat without kernel access they sure as hell would, regardless of cost or effort. There is a TON of money to be made in competitive fps games alone, and they’re pretty much all overrun by hackers
I have no idea what is going on with the Tischposting but I am glad you guys are having a good time
