Yeah I guess you’re right. Both sides have been pretty…apocalyptic lately.

The reason I singled out leftists is that over the last couple decades, in the ideological struggle between socialists and capitalists… the capitalists pretty much won. There are are still some holdouts around the world but in general leftists are left on the outside looking in as the capitalist-led world grows more prosperous (and lots of bad things too, I’m not trying to play it off as capitalist good socialist bad). But in their position, all leftists can really do is criticize the status quo. And, again, there are plenty of valid criticisms to make, but because they are removed from power leftists can’t do very much “look at the good things socialism is doing,” it’s 99% “look at all the bad things capitalism is doing”. At least in the US/Western Europe.
The right-wing can at least say things like “the economy is doing well” and “technology is advancing due to [Company]'s breakthrough” in between fear-mongering about immigration.
Reading through all the other doomposts I felt obligated to share my view.
I read national/international news every day, and I’m still optimistic about humanity’s future.
First off, I don’t bother with local news at all. That really is just a cesspool of crime reporting. My dad summarized local news pretty well: “someone was murdered today, and heres some footage of blood on the pavement.”
As far as national and international news goes, I read it because I think it’s interesting and it’s good to stay informed, but you can’t use it as a barometer for how the world’s doing, because news is just inherently negative. It doesn’t mean the world is actually doing bad!
Which of the following do you think would get reported as a headline?
“Indonesia enjoys another year without a tsunami”
“Thousand killed as tsunami ravages Indonesian coast”
“Global poverty rate continues slow, steady decline”
“Millions at risk of starvation as African crops fail”
“Good news, no new deadly infectious diseases this year”
“Scientists raise alarm over spread of bird flu”
I think maybe it’s helpful to think of the news not as objective reporting on the state of the world but rather like a police blotter that just logs bad things that have happened. And I think it’s perfectly fine to tune it out and just live your life. If you’re interested in a particular issue, like homelessness or an election maybe look at a less sensational information source like Wikipedia or something.
Also, just a little mini-rant: the two types of people who are most negative about the state of the world are religious missionaries and leftists. Because in order to convince you that the world needs a savior they have to convince you that we aren’t on a path to do it ourselves. So, maybe steer clear of news on Lemmy as well haha
Look if companies could implement successful anticheat without kernel access they sure as hell would, regardless of cost or effort. There is a TON of money to be made in competitive fps games alone, and they’re pretty much all overrun by hackers
Yeah I’ve only ever found 1 game play chann on YouTube that I enjoy watching, Macie Jay who makes compilations of his stream for YouTube. He’s incredibly creative playing R6, it’s really fun to watch. But in general I don’t get watching someone play a game when I could just play it myself.
So, what makes you think he’s been taken in by fascist doctrine? Are we talking, “he thinks Dave Chapelle is funny and rolls his eyes at wokeness” or are we talking “defends hitler at the dinner table”? I ask just because I feel like some very liberal/leftist people can be pretty jumpy about things that are ultimately harmless. Additionally he might just be doing/saying things to act out and get a rise out of you. You’re not gonna fix that by making him read “white fragility” or something.
As far as gifts go I agree with many others in suggesting something that will make him interact with other worldviews in the real world. Maybe you can get him into a hobby that is shared by people across many different socioeconomic backgrounds like basketball or martial arts or travel or something.
Well, it’s gender neutral, neither party can (legally) change their name after marriage. That seems weird to me. Let people do what they want.
Hmm but what do you do if your name is already hyphenated? You can’t just keep bolting names together so that’s not a solution for more than one generation.
…it doesn’t?

Yeah I remember getting in argument with someone who suggested violence/intimidation against everyone who committed the crime of…wait for it… driving a Cybertruck
Whoa that’s fucking dark. I’m a very strong Ukraine supporter but the dehumanization of Russian soldiers is disturbing.
For me, I blocked the political subs and it helped a lot. But idk what content is bothering you. Are you looking at local to lemmy.ca? Idk anything about that instance. Lemmy.world seems pretty chill, it has the reputation of being the most mainstream instance
There a huge difference between apolitical and not wanting to be spammed by left-wing echo chamber talking points. Who do leftists think they are reaching on Lemmy anyways lol.
I dealt with this for a while, although I don’t think that it was depression related. I think it was more to with stress from work/ moving.
Exercise is good, I think going to bed earlier is counterproductive. You may want to look at sleep restriction therapy- the idea is that you are trying to minimize the time you spend in bed while not asleep.
What do you do when you wake up? Keep in mind that waking up in the middle of the night is completely normal- everyone does it, it’s just normally you fall right back asleep and don’t think about it. Are you scrolling on your phone, getting up or just laying there? Definitely don’t look at your phone at all, that’s probably the most important aspect of sleep hygiene.
Ultimately I think for me what helped me get over this was just becoming “zen” about waking up early. When it first started happening to me I was thinking “ah shit not again! I need to relax right now to fall back to sleep! Oh no another 30 minutes have passed and I’m still awake!”. But over time I would just wake up early and be like “eh whatever, hopefully I can get back to sleep.” Being okay with not falling back asleep makes it easier to fall back to sleep, it’s kind of a catch-22.
Other things that have helped:
-Going back to the being chill about waking up early, try taking magnesium glycinate. Again I wouldn’t treat this as a long term fix but it might help short term. It’s a mild sedative, I find it helps me sleep more deeply and relax.
-Are you getting cold? I have a high metabolism and I get colder as the night goes on. Adding an extra blanket when you wake up might help you fall back to sleep by lowering your metabolism.
-if you’re laying awake for more than an hour it’s time to get up. That goes back to the sleep hygiene thing as well. You want to make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. During the day keep your time in the bedroom to a bare minimum and don’t go to bed until you feel properly tired.
I hope it gets better for you m8. Improving sleep is tricky because it’s not something you can actively try at, at least not the same way you exercise or something. I should add that there are super-short-duration antidepressants that you can take to fall back to sleep. There mentioned to me by a doctor although I never took them so I don’t remember the name of the drug.
I don’t really know what you’re saying with most of these points, I think you’re calling me a racist for trying to interpret your statement about the original Jewish settlers being Arab.
I agree, nobody has a right to force you from your home. I strongly oppose Isreals settlements in the West Bank and their occupation of Gaza. I also oppose calls for their eviction from Israel. Can’t you see it’s the same thing? “But it was the Palistineans land first” you say- no, that is clearly untrue, Jewish people were living in Israel since the Iron Age, and it was the Arabs (and Romans) that evicted them.
And what’s this about land being taken from Arab Muslims to build the Jewish temples? You do know that Jewish people were living in Israel since before Islam was a religion right?
Wait so you’re saying the Jewish people of Judea/Kingdom of Israel were Arab? Genetically you kind of have a point (Palestinean people and Jewish are closely related) but culturally they are very different, at least since the founding of Judaism. But even if Jewish people were Arab, wouldn’t that mean that they have equal claim to the land with the Palestinians?
Officially though none of that is canon right?
