JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto Steam@lemmy.ml•Valve's reported profit-per-head from Steam commissions is out there, and at $3.5 million per employee it makes Apple and Facebook look like a lemonade stand4·3 months agoIirc valve will even allow devs to generate as many steam keys as they want and sell them outside of steam for no cut whatsoever (and Steam will still provide support for the game on the launcher for those keys). And virtually no devs do it. They prefer to take the 30%. So that tells me that what they charge is more than fair to the devs

When Netflix had 90% of the shows that you wanted to watch and they weren’t annoying little fucks with account sharing and geo location, everyone was happy to support them
But once paying users feel like they are being taken advantage of, instead of catered to, they leave.
There’s so many cases where pirating is not only cheaper (duh) it’s actually a better product/experience. And when you charge to provide a worse product/experience than what people can get for free, then you can’t be surprised at the outcome
That seems great! I’ll definitely check it out
Any communities here on Lemmy that you’d also recommend?
And thank you once again!
So as a leftist that I think identifies with Marxist-Leninist ideology but that didn’t find the communist manifesto an interesting nor easy read (it was small but not really approachable) are there any books that you recommend? I’m no economist but I do like reading logical arguments as to why capitalism doesn’t work, or better said, doesn’t work for the good of the majority but instead for a small minority (for whom it works very very well)
i.e. you want to give the companies the guns to go hunting for food, except you still want to tell them what they can hunt, but you don’t have any guns yourself. But surely they will obey you and not point out that they have the guns so you should make whatever rules they want
In this case “you” is either the OP of this this thread or just a general you
JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are Nintendo's $80 online game prices a result of tariffs or is Nintendo just using them as an excuse to price gouge as corporations do?4·6 months agoCompetition for entertainment is higher than ever. You even have extremely good free games
An upward increase makes sense only because corporations will try to squeeze every possible cent from consumer. That’s the only justification that they need
JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are Nintendo's $80 online game prices a result of tariffs or is Nintendo just using them as an excuse to price gouge as corporations do?141·6 months agoGames don’t cost 90$ today for other platforms tho… even Nintendo that are a few years old still cost basically the same as at launch
JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why aren't there mass protests in the USA?1·6 months agoNo, I disagree. If things are really fucked (as they are) 30% of a population is more than enough to enact change. If they are really motivated to do so. Get most of those 30% only the street and you see what power it has.
Of course with 80/90% it’s easier. Much much easier but that’s just fantasy land. You can get 90% of the population to agree on many basic facts, so you can forget about having then agree to protest together.
Plenty of revolutions were made, and dictatorships overturned with much fewer people on board.
I very much disagree on how much power 30% of the population has. Yes the electoral system you have in the USA is beyond stupid. However voting is only the easiest and most polite way to make change.
Go on strike, protest, build some guillotines. If the population really wants it, change will be made, even if it’s only 15/30%. Because the remainder of that population will not opposite necessarily. They just don’t care enough to protest.
Luigi Mangione is just 1 person for example.
JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why aren't there mass protests in the USA?10·6 months agoThat’s just wrong
Put 20/30% of the population of any city or county out on the streets and it will make headlines
It’s technically a loud minority but a very loud and significant minority
The problem is that of those 20/30% only 10% will actually get out on the streets so you are left with around 2% of the general population. And that ain’t much

But are you playing with reduced graphics or did the game age that poorly?

I was never really that good but that isn’t the point

JimmyMcGill@lemmy.worldto Games@lemmy.world•Currently downloading The Witcher 3 for the first time. Got any advice for me?English191·1 year agoAs other folk said, definitely do get the DLCs. There’s a whole other game in there.
It’s been a while since I last played, and this game IS a masterpiece, no doubt about that, but the one of the first sections can be rough. Iirc it’s gloomy af, there’s some hard monsters in some quests that can be demotivating and the combat/mechanics takes some getting used to which makes the previous point worse. Just know that the game opens up and there’s a whole world out there.
There are tons of side quests which are great, so you should do those but also don’t feel like you need to do all of them. It can be easy to get side tracked and then lose steam and quit on the main story.
Especially because like I said the DLCs are amazing. They are also quite self contained so it’s like a breath of fresh air
Enjoy this amazing game. I’m jealous of you

In any case W3 gwent is actually kinda crap in terms of balance but that just means you can own them super hard at some point

You will be one of the Lemmy legends in the future
Or for me it would make CP2077 and hundreds of other games free to play on the Steam deck (since I already own them)
