No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do people pronounce ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) like it's a word?
6·2 months agoSo, you now learned that human behaviour is often silly when observed without context

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do people pronounce ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) like it's a word?
5·2 months agoBecause it is a word, or it’s easier to say, or funnier.
It’s definitely not the only case. NATO comes to mind, or GOAT, NIMBY. Yesterday I heard someone say (in a tv series episode) ‘fudney’ for FDNY
What it ‘actually’ is does not matter.
It’s ICE, as in: cold as

Dungeons and Dragons@lemmy.world•How it feels to come back to Dungeons and Dragons after 20 years.
6·2 months agoI played in a university gaming club from 1984-1989. Then nothing, but it kept popping up in my life. I just had nobody to play with anymore. Then 2016 arrived, and I did some internet searching. I found (after some false starts) a group, that I still play with every Thursday night.
Yes, for me it also feels like home.
I hope your—and mine—d&d journey keeps on giving!

Good question. So, perform an experiment: put an ice cube without air bubbles in a glass containing a mixture of ice and cold water. The temperature should become 0°C (just before it freezes), measure it.
Your hypothesis: ice is heavier than water, so it will sink
Execute the test several times, preferably 10 times or more. More is better.
Please share your experiment results. Interesting data to know for each test would include:
- sequence number of the test
- temperature of the mixture before and after you put the ice cube in
- method of ice cube creation
- volume of the ice cube
- volume of water/ice mixture
- depth of the water/ice mixture (should be > size of the ice cube)
- type of water used (tap, bottled, …)
- did the ice cube sink
- if no, what volume of the cube remained above the surface level
please also share your conclusion.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•People who live in the Netherlands, how is it there?
15·3 months agoMost of us Dutchies are more or less fluent in English (over 90% of the population), and yes, many will switch to English quickly, even if you start the conversation in Dutch but are not a native speaker.
German and Dutch are closely related, but most Dutch people are not fluent in German — speaking German here is usually limited to “hallo, wie geht’s?” and ordering meals or drinks.
The Netherlands is generally very LGBTQ positive, but exceptions exist.
Immigration depends on where you’re from and if you have a job here. Visiting as a tourist is easy if you are already living in Germany - just remember to bring your passport (often it’s not checked, but there are exceptions). We love friendly tourists!

cats@lemmy.world•Hey. Aren’t you supposed to be paying attention to ME?
12·3 months agoLies. Cats don’t ask questions, they assert their rightful place.
Stop doing whatever you do, adore me!

You roll it, it drops off the table and stops 15
yardsmeters away–if you’re lucky. Or the cat thinks you finally have time for them and playfully pushes theballdie under the couch.I think my d30 is good enough.
Insight check! I think they’re just trying to deceive us, that this actually is an attempt to LFG.
Some great mind took hours to break this password. Hours!
Spoiler: the pony survived!
Jon and Bodhi are also playing their part as Group Patrons in the official 5e (published by WotC on dmsguild) book “Minsc and Boo’s Journal of Villainy”
Including quests, stat blocks, lore, and special group perks.
Applying real world logic to game rules never works out.
Also, you forget to take into account the weapon’s mass, form, structural integrity, the commoner’s reaction time, probability to fumble, the force of the wind, and probably a few dozen other factors that have an effect in the real world.
Just don’t. It’s a game.

RPGMemes @ttrpg.network•Because of some comments I got under my last post…
89·6 months agoIf you look up the definition for an Object, it specifies that it is “a nonliving, distinct thing” — such as a corpse.
However, the definition of Creature does not say it must be living. So, a corpse is both a creature and an object.
There are even creatures that have never been living — such as constructs — and thus are also objects.
define ‘side’.
How many sides on a ball?
Psst, are you sleeping?

Dungeons and Dragons@lemmy.world•Which VTT offers the most fluid experience?
4·7 months agoIt’s pretty easy for players. You can lock everything and give them access to their own token(s) only. The player can pan and zoom their own view, but when required you can sync all player views with your current view.
I’ve used Owlbear Rodeo in online sessions with co-workers that had never before played any ttrpgs, and it went great.

Nitpicky, but 2 out of 3 core rulebooks of the 2024 version were released in 2024, not just one.
Using year labeling of your product is generally a bad idea, imho, because it makes it appear outdated really quick.
