  • I’m not clinical, but I worked in medical IT off and on.

The shit I would hear from clinical staff.

Had a senior surgeon call me because his application was frozen. Cool, cool, lets get that going - wait - you’re what - palpating a child’s heart to keep it beating in rhythm? There are back ups upon back ups for anything IT related in that scenario. Don’t call your overnight helpdesk with that shit, have your nurse write it down on paper. Fuck.

Most traumatic IT call I’ve ever had. Didn’t even care to solve his IT issue, just focused on patient care. My 20 something ass with a few years behind the desk told him to focus on the patient’s LIFE first and foremost, we can talk later.

Always great for an interview question though - how do you respond under stress? Well, lol…

  • I don’t disagree. My last job was using winget to update some things. I raised the concept of trusting otherwise unknown updates, but I was pushed aside for the quick utility.

I’m only a student of cybersecurity, but I harshly judge my former “security expert” on far more than that.

Like fuck, the help desk has to install every patch, to every machine, through a spreadsheet?

No, deploy that shit from a server. Fuck.

In a way, I’m glad I left. In another way, I would really like a pay check again… and I moved to a well, tech illiterate state. Fuck me.

  • I picked up Veilguard because I enjoyed Origins and Inquisition. The second game… at this point, I don’t think I took it right and its my problem and I need to give it another chance.

I’m still very early into the game, but the only “woke” thing I’ve seen so far is variable gender identity during character creation.

You want to play a “woman” who looks masculine, with atypical male traits, even a penis, and a deep voice? You know what, I’m glad the option is open to people. It doesn’t vibe with me personally, but I’m glad that people I care about can make a character that is “them,” because who hasn’t made themselves in an RPG at some point in their life, best they were able.

Again, I’m early to it, but that is all of the “woke” shit I’ve seen.

For the record, I have friends and family in the LGTBQ+(whatever, doesn’t matter) that I support.

I don’t want hate in my heart, and I’ve worked very hard to overcome some biases that came from my more “southern” upbringing. Hell, one of those biased views from the past is now openly trans, and I was the only family member they talked to because they couldn’t talk to anyone else.

I’m imperfect, as all humans are, but it isn’t hard to fucking TRY, just a little, to realize that someone else’s self image and happiness doesn’t affect mine other than what pronouns I use to refer to them. Fuck, its not hard. Just don’t be a dick.

  • The last group I was with ran mostly DND 5e. However, our DM needed a break, and another player took up the reigns for a Star Wars Table Top.

It was not serious. Homebrew and the rule of cool made it a blast - Think Guardians of the Galaxy comedy in a Star Wars wrapper.

The DM for that set goal posts. Like around a certain level, force sensitive classes would get their first light saber.

My character was a bounty hunter who finally got his Mandalorian armor where I could customize “components” like a hand mounted flame thrower, or a shoulder cannon, or what the fuck ever. We spent more time dissecting statistics to get it balanced than anything thematic.

Totally home brewed in that system.

I think that was my best table top experience, and I’m an old school DND nerd. I feel like some days I can barely do my job, but I can quote how THAC0 works on a whim.

I don’t understand statistics unless dice are involved, and no that does not extend to gambling dice games. Utterly useless, but I can go into an ADHD hyper focus on anything that is not actually beneficial to my life in a tangible way, lol.

  • North Texas:

Cold Season: A pair of jeans, a metal band thsirt, and a hoody. I’ll probably wear the hoody as “outerwear” all week.

Hot Season: A pair of black cargo shorts, a metal band thshirt, and depending on activity - a hat.

At my current job, replace the metal band tshirt with a polo. Jeans always. And work is fucking cold, so usually a hoody too, even when its 100+ outside during the day (I work nights)

Edit: I will say my, “I’m staying home, not answering the door, and fuck everyone but my wife” outfit is my birthday suit.

I’m not a nudist, but I find comfort at home to be nude. It isn’t sexual, its just… free.

I mean, what is stopping parade drills at places like children’s hospitals?

Do it once a month, give those kids some magic back in their life.

Children’s hospitals suck, no matter how hard everyone is trying to be upbeat. You don’t get over conversations that include phrases like non-accidental trauma in a NICU. Someone beat the shit out of a baby already in the NICU. Hell holes.

  • Not to mention, it is entirely possible to get home from work, play, and then realize you are now late for work.

Its just engaging on a level that most modern game’s can’t hope to achieve.

Hell, I’ve installed a game (old), then installed mods, then resolved all the mod issues, then launch it to realize I don’t actually want to play it.

Factorio? Mods are easy, and vanilla is enough to keep someone occupied and happy if they lack internet or something.

Its light weight too, it costs me virtually nothing to install it on anything that can run it.

  • From a long time nicotine user, I’ll address your bullet points.

Intense: A combination of no tolerance with being sensitive to it.

How do people enjoy: You’re sensitive to it, what you described sounds like a case of nicotine poisoning. When I started vaping and rolled my own coils and all that jazz, I experimented a lot and consumed way too much nicotine in the beginning. The happiness is a lie, as well as the help with anxiety. Nicotine withdrawal feels very similar to being anxious at some stages. It is relief of those withdrawal symptoms that people associate with less anxiety or even happiness.

Are the symptoms related: I could not tell you that.

Addicted: Unlikely you’d be addicted after a single use case, that being said, it feels awful, but the awful tapers after about 3 days - the future cravings mean you’re addicted, in the most tell tale way. I use nicotine pouches as I’ve moved away from smoking. I still want a good old fashioned Marlboro Red, AKA cowboy killers.

Why do people want to keep it up? Often its a situational thing. You smoke with friends on the weekend, but not during the week. Then its daily, because you start feeling withdrawal. Soon you’re smoking a pack a day ten years later kicking yourself for ever trying it.

If you (or anyone else) can avoid nicotine, I advise it wholeheartedly. The simplest way is just not to start, cliched as that may be.

  • I will cheat in single player games. I give it a solid “first time” unmodded play through. If it’s good, I’ll do other “paths” or “builds” depending on the game.

Then make it a little more… interesting, or different even.

Then you work up to Total Conversions, and thats fucking great for longevity.

Then at a certain point, its quality of life. I don’t want to spend 20 hours getting to the “interesting” part of the game. I can no longer get even just an hour to dive into a game uninterrupted. I love immersion; in the past it was an unhealthy escape mechanism, now when I get it, its a breath of not dealing with my day to day shit for just a little bit. Life always gets in the way of living, at least the way we want or need to in the moment. But I digress…

But cheating in a multiplayer game really defeats the purpose of multiplayer. An unbalanced play field isn’t fun for anyone.

I’d like to see more games embrace a modding community. If you and a few friends want to play with mods A, B, D, and F, more power to you guys. Keep enjoying that game.

Just don’t force an imbalance on other people.
