  • Corporate ownership, but you can have that and still be generally accepted in the community. Like both Fedora when controlled by Red Hat and Suse when controlled by Novell.
One of the real problem is their dual license policy for their open source projects, that grant Ubuntu full license and the power to close in an Open source Project if they want. This is decidedly against the GPL spirit, but can be done with dual licensing.
Another problem is the “not made here” mentality, which undermined Wayland for instance.
Ultimately the problem is I guess, that Ubuntu is (was?) trying to make Ubuntu exclusive to Linux, with Canonical controlling key technologies. Seemingly an effort to reduce other Linux distros to second rate players.
Another example of that (apart from dual license and Mir) is their new package system Snap, which is open source on the client side, but proprietary on the server side.
Obviously it’s not a good idea for Linux to use proprietary package systems.

These are of course ideological issues, if you don’t give a shit about those, I suppose Ubuntu is mostly OK. Except minor annoyances like media not working out of the box. And that the PPA system sucks.

  • Lot’s of things were going on in the 70’s. The peace movement, people living together in collective housing, higher sexual freedom and more flexible sexual identity, generally rebelling against authorities, cannabis becoming popular. All this was also expressed in art, music, paintings and movies.

In UK this may have been further emphasized by a very backwards school system, with many attending boarding schools and wearing uniforms.
Something I remember when attending public school in Denmark in the 70’s as extremely backwards compared to conditions here.

I think older generations hated the 70’s, and they are probably still remembered as being a bit silly. But they are also remembered for being a time of optimism, where ideals and hopes for a better future were high.

  • Not sure if you’re being sarcastic but “digital only” means the only way to put games on the device is via digital downloads

I’m pretty sure the keyword here is download and not digital, what other kind of download do they imagine?
I was absolutely being sarcastic about calling downloads digital, since it’s the only kind there is. Even an old acoustic coupler with 75/300 baud is still a digital download, despite being on an analogue line. Which in principle everything up until we got mobile and fiber were. Except ISDN

Each company tries this because it effectively eliminates the third party/aftermarket sales and gets them a monopoly on prices.

Which is why the same attempt originally failed very very badly on Xbox. So yes I absolutely agree on your last part.
Personally I wouldn’t mind that it is download only, if I could save the copy, and buy the downloads as freely from competing shops as used to be the case with installation discs.
