Time for an ICQ for the Fediverse?
Looks like ICQ is finally shutting down, just as interest in retro internet tools is growing.

Best description of Matrix (in relation to XMPP) I read in a while 😎
XMPP doesn’t have link previews or posting, photo albums, even the idea of a picture with caption text us foreign. No comment reaction, retraction or replies. Inline video or video stream, lol no, even gifs don’t work. Talking or video chat ? Not even in your dreams. No wonder the youths hang out on discord
You are very outdated in your info about xmpp. Most of the stuff you mention is available these days.
I manage the xmpp server of my friend group and we don’t have any of that in gajim conversation and siskin
Gajim will have some more of that in the next version, Monocles or Cheogram have more modern features than Conversations and Siskin is very outdated feature wise and you should probably replace it with Monal.
That said it is not true that the three clients you mentioned have none of that. Sure they don’t have all of it, and there is some feature mismatch between them, but you are making it sound much worse than it is.
Oh and you can always use Movim which has most of the features you mentioned.
Thanks, I told the ios users to give monal a try. One responded it didn’t work last time he tried. I will try the android app.
I think the most annoying is tge lack of opengraph support, bot or server side if it has to be. But no url preview suuuuuucks
Cheogram Android has the send half of URL preview. I will be adding display on the receive side this year when I get the time.
Thanks for suggestion I will try that one
I don’t give a shit about any of those things. I’m fine with chat that just doea chat.
I think the few remaining devs agree with you. We think this suck & look forward to whatever comes next. Xmpp is stuck in the past.
All these people “rediscovering” old tech like we didn’t abandon it for a reason. No, I don’t want to build a PC out of old Commodore 64s that barely works and needs to be coded in assembly when I can literally get a mini PC that’s 100x more powerful for $120.
