okay THIS WAS A BLAST thank you for all the questions! i am so sorry i couldn’t answer every single one i have to run to set now but feel free to dm me on IG @team_karim if you want to ask me anything else and i’ll try my best to answer!! 🖖
Oh wow, I didn’t know this corner of the internet got AMA’s. 8O
Late to the party and not really a star trek fan, but still, good on Karim for popping by! 🤗
Which is the better star trek? TOS, TNG, DS9 or VOY?
yoooo, a celebrity on the fediverse? let’s goooooo
Whoa, Lemmy is going places! I never expected to see a Reddit-style AMA to appear here. I don’t have any questions for you, Mr. Karim but I do wish you the best!
Right? This makes me stupid happy to see.
Yeah, I feel like I’m just spamming upvotes on everyone because I’m just so jazzed to see this.
I upvote everything here to encourage activity.
I also comment useless shit just to add activity.
This place is pretty much like Field of Dreams rn; people come, you just gotta build it first.
thank you!
I don’t even watch Star Trek or know who this actor is, and I’m excited too! I wish I had a question!
hahaha well thanks for stopping by!
Is this the thread for questions?
What actor from Trek’s past, that primarily wore lots of makeup and prosthetics, do you look up at as a acting role model?
This is the thread for questions!
Doug Jones!!
Action Saru!
Oh my gosh! Welcome to the Fediverse!
We’re kind of obsessed with Star Trek here.
Um…I don’t have a question. It’s just so cool to see you here. And since Academy is relatively new, I should add welcome to the Trek fandom!
I hope our appreciation for your art shines through!
this is very kind thank you!
Yep this guy just got me to watch. God damnit.
welll heyyy!!! hope you enjoy!!
Yeah… I’ll be watching it now. Edit: Genuinely enjoyed the first episode. Only minor science-based or engineering-based gripes, which I will hold my tongue on. I have put up with MUCH worse! :D
I was always planning on eventually watching, but now I’m putting it on today.
lets go!!!
Qapla! Been watching it on and off all day. Love that freaking low octave. Should be caught up in a couple of hours.
Sorry I’m late guys, i’m locked in now! About to go crazy responding to all these questions lol
I just want to tell you how much I liked the episode that explored Klingon honor and how that hunting scene kept being recontextualized.
The show reminds me of Lower Decks in that it’s different but it’s the same. Cant wait to see more.
Happy to have you here \(>ᗜ<)/
To be clear, this is for 4pm EST
30 more minutes! God I’m excited!
+24 hours. But you can still be excited!
Oh well. Guess I gotta be patient. Thanks for the heads up!
We wanted to make sure there was lots of time to accumulate questions, but the Fediverse is unsurprisingly rising to the occasion.
This sparks joy in me!

The responses are all live in the thread! Or you can check out the u/karim account to see them all in chronological order (but without the questions, which is…challenging).
aww well this is kind, haha thank you for your enthusiasm!! i really appreciate it
Omg he responded to me twice! ☺️
This is incredible, my respect and gratitude to those that are making it happen. Also can’t wait.
Is that the UTC-0500 one?
I wish more people would use that format. It’s much easier to relate to your own time zone.
Depends… I grew up with TV stations advertising shows in Eastern/Pacific time zones while I lived in neither.
I’ve also driven to both of those time zones and can picture how many time zones away they are in my head.
Either one of those is easier for me.
There’s an entire world of timezones that aren’t the US.
It’s easier for you to remember your timezone in ± utc than making everyone else on the planet look up whatever the fuck est is every time we need to.
Well I don’t live in the US, so yeah I know. Anyway, my point is that “easier” is subjective and very much based on a person’s experience.
I’ve looked up UTC compared to my time many times and it just doesn’t stick. I don’t know what the current UTC time is but I could tell you what time it is in Newfoundland no problem. 🤷♂️

Is that the UTC-0500 one?
lmao thanks for the reminder that there are four timezones which could be called “EST” 😭
(but UTC-5 is the only one properly called that)
Over a million upvotes on this post!
Incredible engagement all.
Certainly an instance record but is that a Lemmy record? Are many of those upvotes coming via other APIs or is it just Lemmy’s
I have no idea where you’re seeing a million, I’m seeing 1,300. But that’s still very high for the fediverse! And it’s definitely the highest we’ve ever had in one of our local communities.
LOL — saw k, thought thousand, wrote million
What I get for posting after an IM, screen heavy workday.
Yes, a thousand is huge, even if an order of magnitude lower. 🖖🏼
Might as well had been a million, I don’t think it could have gone better! ❤️
First, I just wanted to say that you’re a treat to watch on Academy and I can’t wait to see where your story goes! It’s always great to see a species fleshed out in Trek, in this case a Klingon that has other pursuits than that of a warrior.
Were you initially intimidated by the fact that you are playing a character that is part of a species that has decades of culture built up to this point? If so, how did you prepare for the role? If not, I can’t tell because you’ve been great so far.
Wildly unexpected. Thank you for doing this! 💜
I’m a huge Star Trek as well as lover of Birds. imagine my surprise to see a Klingon carrying binos and then saying, “I watch birds.” My family started laughing because I wear a t-shirt often that simply says, “I like birds” and they were really really hoping that you would say that. Haha. Close enough!
I have a very serious two part question:
- What is Jay-Den’s favorite bird? And…
- What is Karim’s favorite bird?
🐦 🖖🏽
Where you a Trekkie before you got the role? If so, what’s your favorite show/movie?
First, I admire you for the heart, depth, and character you bring to this role. My question relates to Klingon culture and in-universe development. Star Trek has a rich history of having “flagship characters” for the important cultures (You, Worf, and B’ellana for the Klingons, Spock, Tuvok, and T’Pol for the Vulcans, Deanna and Lwaxana Troi for Betazed, etc.)
What has been the hardest part about redefining Klingon culture post burn? and what defining in-universe moment changed the Klingons the most in the last ~1000 years?
Qapla’! (Also thank you! but Klingon doesn’t have a word for that…)
T’Pol and Tuvok would be crying in a corner now, if they allowed themselves to feel feelings.
Oh man, you are right!
Hello Karim! How does it feel to be the first (or at least one of the first) celebrities to do an AMA on Lemmy?
looooool! It’s an honor!! 🖖
It’s an honor to have you.
would you rather fight 100 tribble-sized sehlats or one sehlat-sized tribble?
The trouble with (sehlat sized) tribbles is that won’t remain 1 sehlat sized for tribble for long!
Hey Karim, super cool to have you here. I love what you’ve done with your character so far and I’m hoping for continued success on SFA.
- What’s the energy like on set? Are there any particularly strong jokesters? Tim Russ on Voyager was noted for cracking a lot of jokes, for example, and I think Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner had a similar reputation on the set of TNG.
- Are you into science fiction generally? If so, what’s your favorite book, movie, or tv series?
- What do you wish people knew about SFA (or you!) that they don’t seem to?
energy on set is VERY playful. like a real school. jokes, pranks, a lot of fun. Honestly, every single cadet has a funny sense of humor, its like ping pong with the laughs. Kerrice is DEFINITELY the most responsible for making everyone crack up tho
i LOVE sci fi. I think predator badlands that just came out was one of the my favorite movies from the previous year. underrated in my opinion??
