But why would they? They can’t put anything meaningful on a tiny device like this that is powered by HDMI. TV+ is available on Smart TVs. What kind of niche audience would this have?

They don’t need to limit themselves to HDMI power. They could do like the Chromecast and Fire stick do, and have an external power source for 7.5W or whatever over USB. At that power level, I’m sure Apple could develop or repurpose their existing silicon lineup to be able to make a passively cooled stick design for under $100.

Given how much they’ve shrunk the Mac mini down, the next Apple TV will either be a surprisingly powerful gaming console in its current form factor, or they’ll keep its performance roughly equivalent to how it is now but have it in a far smaller form.

My money would be on the latter. Smaller devices mean more can be shipped for the same cost in less expensive packaging, and that’s the Cook Way. They’ve no real interest in offering ‘proper’ gaming on ATV, so as long as it can work with 8K signals it’ll be powerful enough for what it needs to do.

Owning a current gen Apple TV, there really isn’t that much more to shrink before it is in the stick format.
