Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are you scared of AI becoming sentient? How do we ensure we never make one that is?
1·3 months agoA robot will never feel all the ways a human can. For example stress pains.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Debian: Are apps in Discover store all Flatpaks by default?
6·5 months agoOkay thanks. I’m thinking of sticking with deb packages also at the moment because a lot of apps on the flathub website say “Unverified”

Linux@lemmy.ml•I want to move out from Ubuntu and use something else.
1·5 months agoIf you’re seeking something simple to use where you may never need to open the terminal, I’d say ZorinOS(Lite).
You can also test out Debian if you don’t mind a bit of tinkering on the terminal. You’ll have to add yourself as a user to the sudoers list first thing but there are plenty of 2-second video tutorials on how.
For both distros, if you are searching for support, you’d search “on Ubuntu” and basically the same would apply.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I'm very bad at convincing people to care about their privacy
1·5 months agoYeah the washing machine app is for the public laundromat. I tried it on GrapheneOS with everything enabled but it was lacking something that is only on stock Google Android. I haven’t tried it on a MicroG phone yet.

1·5 months agoI have friends who care about privacy but they need phones that can do Uber and washing machine apps. So I’m the only one i know with a private FOSS phone.

3·6 months agoI once got a pop up ad on an old tablet where the person in the image looked a lot like me. It was so bizarre. I thought it was some AI generated ad. This was like 3 years ago though and I didn’t have Facebook anymore.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can someone get through college on GNU Linux?
101·6 months agoI’m going into a Medical Lab Tech program. I know 1 lab tech but he went to school in the 80’s. So I’m not sure what software they use now.
I use it for everyday things like schoolwork and gmail and it works great so far. I still have Librewolf on the side but it seems like it’s for more privacy and that you’re not supposed to change it too much for example adding more extensions or it defeats the purpose of it.

They had me install the Lockdown browser for at-home proctored exams. It’s a browser that won’t let you switch tasks or even open another program or tab. Idk if it would take screenshots without opening it though but then again all kinds of programs are running in Windows all the time.
Would they do that tho? I mean I don’t know if I’ve heard of someone getting penalized because the school was secretly taking screenshots.
Edit I just realized I sound way too paranoid but it’s an interesting question
