illusionist@lemmy.zipto Linux@lemmy.ml•How do I check that my system is Linux-compatible?75·13 days agoJust make a live usb of the distro you want to use and check it out. If mint has no live usb usr amother distro, most have. Just use a big one. Since mint is just ubuntu it should be good

It’s great. The only downside is not having a release schedule. It had one or two annoying bugs in the past but nothing serious.
I didn’t read anything about nova for the past years, I even forgot that it was a thing.
Edit: there has been no fdroid or github release since 2022. There are still commits in the repo but I don’t know if the published version on telegram is the one from github. Does this make it closed source now?

That is a rabbit hole. There are as many tools as sand on the beach.
One of the tools you are looking for is probably starship.
But you can make it as easy as customiying PS1 with e.g. https://bash-prompt-generator.org/

illusionist@lemmy.zipto Linux@lemmy.ml•Need some opinions on my next Laptop and Linux Distro2·22 days agoThat sounds bad. Are there any examples?
I mean it would be easier to just say that fedora is american and suse is european. And thus, suse should be preferred.
Fedora is a great distro, what decision did IBM take/influence that makes it worse?
Opensuse is awesome but fedoras atomic ostree distros are amazing. Opensuse does not have such an amazing distribution channel afaik. There is no bazzite built with suse. And no other ublue project.
Then post that into a linux community. Please don’t post non linux related stuff.
Post it into a windows community, not linux.
That’s why there is mint. To circumvent ubuntu’s bad choices.
Which distro do you use? Those maintainers are the ones who decide what settings and apps are default in the final distro. It sounds like there is a keyboard and it’s just not yet the GNOME default.
Just like ubunru chooses to use a task bar which is not default in vanilla GNOME.

I’ve got fedora and I have no idea what version it runs. Must be the same for ubuntu/mint. You just let it auto update and don’t care about it anymore
Edit: reading other comments shows that people recommend waiting. I don’t get it. Just install it now and update in a couple of days. Even if it was tomorrow, I wouldn’t wait. On fedora updates happen in the background, maybe I’m spoiled.

illusionist@lemmy.zipto Linux@lemmy.ml•Do you guys just have flawless experiences or what?2·30 days agoYou compare a machine that a vendor has prepared for windows to you preparing the pc for linux. It sounds like you did the setup. Alternatively, you could’ve paid someone to do that job for you. You could’ve bought a framework laptop with linux. It would work out of the box without any issues. And if there is one, you can blame framework.
Because I had issues with the distros I was using, I distro jumped. If the distro is perfect, there is little reason to jump. Ever since jumping onto fedora silverblue I don’t do anything with the OS anymore. It just works. I mainly install flatpaks. Did you try a live usb with some distros before deciding upon ubuntu studio? You chose one niche distro and to me it sounds like you judge about all distros.
A distro is just a package manager and a set of settings and apps pre selected by someone. If those settings don’t work out for you, it might be the wrong distro.
That adds an unneccessary layer of complexity to thr situation. Resizing partitions isn’t difficult or takes long.
Sounds like a small backpack
