Taking this to an extreme, if you can’t gain access via software (unlikely if it hasn’t been updated in 5 years), you could disassemble it, locate the SPI interface for the NAND (assuming it uses SPI), and use something like an arduino with a loaded SPI reader sketch to read it. You can then pick it apart to find vulnerabilities, or just replace it.
I vote for Debian sid (the “rolling” version of Debian). I use it and it’s great.
By “lack of developer freedom”, do you mean “lack of ability to take the freedom you got with the code away from the next person?”

Not necessarily, the SFC is involved in a big case regarding Vizio about this right now. The FSF was brought in to explain the intended interpretation and spirit of the GPL.

For one, it bases it’s bias assessments on American politics. The UK is less right-wing than the US but when this bot comes along it calls a source which we might call centrist, “left”.
In a way, it’s like an attempt to shift the overton window for other countries closer to the US, and that’s not a good thing.

Linus wrote a kernel, and GNU wrote the majority of the userspace at the time.
How is that coat-tails-ing? Both projects had a tremendous amount of effort poured into them. And let’s not forget GCC was the only free compiler for 20 years.
If people were asking for it to be called “GNU” only, then it’d be unfair. But they aren’t.
ext4 has been battle-tested for many years and is very stable. Doesn’t have the same fragmentation and data loss issues certain other filesystems like NTFS have.
It’s likely because of the extra complexity involved in microkernels. Especially like the Hurd, which really didn’t take off because it was too ambitious and Linux was finished faster.
